Chapter 86
Evelyn's playful expression vanished as she locked eyes with Abigail. The time for games was over.
"I'm only telling you this because I want you to stop wasting your energy trying to kick me out. When our agreement ends, I'll leave without hesitation. Even if you beg me to stay, I won't."
Abigail blinked in confusion. "Agreement? What are you talking about?"
Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "You really don't know? Your brother only married me to appease your grandfather's health condition. In three months, when his condition stabilizes, this marriage ends. Then you can parade any woman you want as your sister-in-law."
Abigail's face twisted with disbelief. "Why should I trust you'll actually leave? I know your type - always scheming to stay close to Nathaniel!"
A cold smile played on Evelyn's lips. "Miss Grayson, are you deaf or just dense? Your precious brother isn't my type! Frankly, I can't wait to be rid of him! These three months can't pass quickly enough!"
Abigail studied Evelyn's face, searching for deception.
'She doesn't seem to be lying. Could she really not want Nathaniel?'
"And if you don't want to make this separation more difficult, I suggest you keep this three-month arrangement from your grandmother. You know how she is - already planning baby names. If she finds out this marriage is temporary, she'll interfere. Understand?"
With that, Evelyn stood to leave.
She'd only revealed the truth to prevent Abigail from causing more trouble after her release. Dealing with this spoiled brat was exhausting.
Abigail's face paled as realization struck. If Evelyn never intended to stay, then all her scheming had been pointless. She'd even gotten herself arrested for nothing. What had she been thinking?
"Evelyn!" Abigail shouted.
Evelyn paused at the door. "What now?"
With her trademark haughty expression, Abigail sniffed. "Fine. I'll believe you. I won't cause trouble during these three months. Now tell them to release me!"
Evelyn smirked. "Sorry, princess. What you did was illegal. The law says fifteen days detention. Behave yourself - it'll be over before you know it."
Abigail's composure shattered. "I refuse to stay here! Get Nathaniel! He'll have me released immediately!"
Evelyn ignored the tantrum and walked out.
In the hallway, Nathaniel stood by a window deep in conversation with a senior officer. From his insignia, he was likely the Police Chief, who appeared to be apologizing profusely.
"Mr. Grayson, my deepest apologies. My officers treated your wife as a suspect and nearly arrested her! This was entirely our fault."
"The new recruits lack experience. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive them."
Nathaniel's voice was ice. "My forgiveness means little. What matters is my wife's feelings. Fortunately for your officers, she's merciful."
The Chief sighed in relief. "Indeed, Mrs. Grayson is most gracious. Still, I'll ensure they apologize personally."
Nathaniel remained silent as the Chief excused himself to take a call.
Evelyn approached with a mocking smile. "What's this? Arranging special treatment for your sister?"
Nathaniel barely glanced at her. "You presume too much. The law must take its course with Abigail."
Evelyn's eyebrows shot up. "You'd really leave her here?"
"She's an adult," Nathaniel said coldly. "Not a child. She'll face the consequences of her actions. It's the only way she'll learn."
Evelyn nodded approvingly. "Finally, a relative who doesn't coddle her!"
Stretching, she turned toward the exit. Outside, she noticed someone following closely.
She spun around to find Nathaniel right behind her. "Aren't you visiting your grandmother at the hospital?"
