Chapter 477
Gabrielle seemed more concerned about the child's wellbeing than Amelia, the boy's own mother!
Little Ethan lay quietly in the pediatric ward bed, tears glistening in his eyes. Under Amelia's instruction, he obediently extended his tiny arm for the IV insertion.
He was being remarkably brave. Not a single whimper escaped his lips as the needle pierced his skin.
Evelyn's heart ached watching this. She stepped closer to examine Ethan's medical chart - the one Amelia had bribed the doctor to prepare.
The IV solution contained nothing but basic saline and vitamins, no complex medications.
Still, administering saline to such a young child seemed unnecessary. Could his small body handle it?
As an expectant mother herself, Evelyn couldn't bear seeing Amelia exploit the child this way. She was about to intervene when-
Amelia's phone rang. "Nathaniel! You're here?" Her voice turned sugary sweet. "We're in room 602, sixth floor. Ethan's just getting his IV started."
Hearing Nathaniel had arrived, Evelyn froze mid-step. Any thought of confrontation vanished. With quick thinking, she slipped into the ward's bathroom to hide.
Amelia's eyes gleamed with satisfaction seeing Evelyn retreat. Perfect. The last thing she wanted was Nathaniel spotting Evelyn here.
Gabrielle had been equally worried about another encounter between them. Seeing Evelyn hide like a frightened mouse, she nodded approvingly. At least the girl knew her place.
The steady rhythm of approaching footsteps announced Nathaniel's arrival.
"What happened to the boy?" His deep voice carried concern.
Amelia immediately adopted a fragile tone. "It's nothing serious, Nathaniel. Just a minor allergic reaction. I panicked when I called you earlier. I hope I didn't disrupt your work?"
"No." Nathaniel moved to examine the child now connected to the IV drip.
"Don't worry," Amelia assured him. "The doctor said he'll be perfectly fine."
Nathaniel gave a noncommittal hum before turning abruptly. "Good. I need to use the restroom."
Both women's faces paled at his declaration. Their eyes widened in alarm as panic set in.
Evelyn was still hiding in there!
Nathaniel reached the bathroom door in three long strides. His hand twisted the knob - it didn't budge.
His brow furrowed. "Someone's in there?"
Inside the cramped bathroom, Evelyn's pulse hammered so loudly she feared he might hear it.
