Chapter 429
Sebastian and Seraphina exchanged glances. Their hearts ached for Evelyn.
Since childhood, she had never known the warmth of a family. Instead, she was exiled to the countryside, enduring hardships no child should face. They had witnessed firsthand the blood, sweat, and tears she shed to reach where she stood today.
Seeing Evelyn so subdued, Sebastian decided to lighten the mood. "Boss, let’s hit the bar to celebrate getting your engagement gifts back."
'Drinking in the middle of the day? Hard pass.' Evelyn wasn’t in the mood. She waved him off. "Sebastian, find out if any grand mansions were demolished in Thssa over the last twenty years. If so, track down the original owner. Also, dig up everything on a former Thssa University student named Vivian Sterling. Get me the details ASAP."
Sebastian sensed the urgency in her tone. "Vivian Sterling—that’s your mother’s name?"
Evelyn nodded. 'Mister Grayson might believe my mother was killed by an enemy, but my gut tells me she’s still alive.'
Seraphina adjusted her gold-rimmed glasses, frowning at Evelyn’s pallor. "We should eat first. Look at you—you’ve lost weight."
Sebastian studied Evelyn and nodded. With a teasing grin, he added, "Boss, don’t tell me you’ve lost your appetite pining over Mister Nathaniel. Food fixes everything. My treat—what do you want?"
Seraphina shot him a glare. "You’re buying her lunch? Remind me again who’s responsible for you not being broke right now? You’d be penniless without her!"
Sebastian scoffed. "Exactly why I’m treating her! What’s wrong with that?"
Seraphina rolled her eyes. "Fine. Let’s get grilled lamb chops. It’s getting cold, and lamb warms you up. The boss always craves the fat this time of year."
The mention of lamb chops usually made Evelyn’s mouth water. But this time, the thought of the rich, smoky flavor twisted her stomach.
Suddenly, she couldn’t hold it in. She yanked down the car window, leaned out, and retched violently. When she finally pulled back inside, gasping, she found Sebastian and Seraphina staring at her like she’d grown a second head.
She knew that look. They’d grown up together—she could read their minds.
Evelyn scowled. "Stop. It’s not what you’re thinking. Just a stomach bug."
Sebastian smirked. "Really? Then tell me, boss—have you and Mister Nathaniel been… careful?"
Evelyn yawned, unfazed. "No need. We sleep in separate rooms."
Sebastian’s jaw dropped. "What? You’re wasting that man’s perfection? How do you resist?"
Seraphina smacked his arm. "Whose side are you on? Our boss is the catch here! Mister Nathaniel should be grateful she even married him!"
"Ow!" Rubbing his arm, Sebastian chuckled. "Fair point."
Seraphina sighed. "Still, to be safe, grab a pregnancy test from the pharmacy."
Evelyn groaned. "Unbelievable."
