Chapter 300
Nathaniel continued sipping his drink calmly, his expression unreadable.
Amelia tugged at his sleeve, leaning closer. "Nathaniel? Are you listening?"
Silence. He didn't even glance her way. No one could decipher what was going through his mind.
Seeing her being ignored, Samuel stepped forward protectively and wrapped an arm around Amelia's shoulders. He shot Nathaniel a disapproving look before turning to Evelyn.
"Miss Whitmore, I don't believe you're entirely heartless. After all, you helped my grandfather when he collapsed last week. Not many would stop for a stranger like that." His voice hardened. "But when it comes to protecting your position, you'll resort to hurting innocent people, won't you?"
Evelyn frowned. "Protecting my position? What exactly are you implying?"
Samuel's eyes narrowed. "You had Amelia attacked because you're threatened by her relationship with Nathaniel."
For a moment, Evelyn looked stunned. Then she laughed. "If she wants to be Mrs. Grayson so badly, she can have the title."
Nathaniel's grip tightened around his glass.
Samuel scoffed. "That doesn't change the fact that you're still the prime suspect."
Evelyn lounged back against her pillows, the handcuffs glinting on her wrists. "I'm not trying to clear my name. Honestly, being his wife is more trouble than it's worth. Your sister can have him."
Nathaniel's jaw clenched at her words. The room tensed - who in their right mind would reject being Nathaniel Grayson's wife? Especially someone like Evelyn, who came from nothing.
Samuel shook his head. "You have one last chance to confess. Admit you hired that man to attack Amelia, and I'll personally request leniency from the judge."
Evelyn yawned dramatically. "How generous. But no thanks."
"Fine." Samuel's smile turned cold. "Enjoy your prison sentence then."
An officer closed his notebook and stood. "Mr. Rivers, we'll need you to come to the station to verify how you obtained the phone evidence."
"Of course," Samuel nodded.
The officer secured Evelyn's ankle to the bed rail with another set of cuffs. "Miss Whitmore, with witness testimony, physical evidence, and motive established, you'll be formally arrested once medically cleared."
Evelyn rolled her eyes. "Whatever."
The officer opened his mouth to reprimand her when a chair scraped loudly behind him.
Nathaniel stood, his towering frame casting a shadow across the room. The air grew heavy with his barely contained fury as he strode toward Evelyn. Everyone instinctively stepped back.
