Chapter 413

Amelia's smile didn't reach her eyes. She forced a gentle expression, masking her irritation beneath a veneer of understanding.

"Don't trouble yourself, Benjamin. I'm perfectly fine. I'm certain Evelyn didn't intend any harm. Let's just... move past this."

Benjamin nodded enthusiastically. "Exactly! She wouldn't do something like that. There must be some mistake. I'll go clarify things with her later."

Amelia clenched her jaw.

'Unbelievable! My own brother takes that woman's side over mine! What spell has she cast on him?' she fumed silently.

Samuel observed their exchange with growing displeasure. His voice cut through the tension like ice. "You seem remarkably certain of Evelyn's character. Tell me, what has she promised you in return for your loyalty?"

Benjamin swallowed hard under Samuel's piercing gaze. "Nothing! She's just... helped me before. Never asked for anything in return. Someone like that couldn't possibly be malicious!"

"Is that so?" Samuel's eyes darkened. "Then you're implying Amelia is lying about the incident?"

"That's not what I said!" Benjamin protested. "I just think there's been a misunderstanding. Evelyn would never hurt Amelia. Absolutely not!"

His emphatic use of "absolutely" made both siblings pause. Neither had seen Benjamin defend anyone with such conviction before.

The usually timid younger brother never challenged Samuel, who ruled the family with an iron fist. Yet here he stood, shoulders squared, ready to battle his intimidating elder brother over Evelyn's reputation.

Their heated exchange drew curious glances from nearby guests.

"Is that the Sinclair brothers arguing? What could possibly cause such a scene?"

"Look at Miss Rivers - she's practically in tears!"

"I've never seen Mister Benjamin stand up to Mister Samuel before. This must be serious."

Samuel studied his brother's uncharacteristic defiance, conflicting emotions flashing across his stern features.

'This timid boy who used to tremble at my shadow now dares oppose me? All for that woman?' The realization burned.

Not wishing to publicly humiliate his brother, Samuel offered an olive branch. "Regardless of today's events, you will stay away from Evelyn Whitmore. No unnecessary contact."

Benjamin's jaw set stubbornly. "She's my friend. I won't abandon her. Forgive me, Samuel, but I can't obey you this time."

"You insolent—!" Samuel barely restrained his temper.

'I gave him an out, yet he still defies me! All for that woman's sake?'

Drawing a steadying breath, Benjamin stood his ground. "Samuel, remember - Evelyn saved Grandfather. Are we really going to repay her kindness with this... this ingratitude?"

"How dare you!" Samuel's voice dropped dangerously low.
