Chapter 339
Evelyn Whitmore adored wealth—just not the kind acquired through marriage or manipulation.
On the phone, Richard Grayson scoffed. "Please! Every woman loves money. How can someone as sharp as you believe otherwise? That girl must've bewitched you!"
Margaret exhaled sharply, her voice strained. "Stay indoors these next few days. If you must go out, be cautious. Nathaniel will handle the online chaos. I have matters to attend to—we'll speak later."
"Understood, Grandma," Evelyn replied softly.
Before the call disconnected, Margaret's furious shout pierced through. "Richard Grayson! Did you just call me naïve?"
A pained yelp followed. "Margaret—I'm an ill man! Let go!"
"Oh, so now you remember you're sick? You seemed perfectly lively a second ago!"
The line went dead.
Evelyn smirked. The elderly couple bickered like children, yet their bond was unshakable—a rarity in any world.
Just then, a video call notification flashed on her screen.
Cassandra.
Evelyn's fingers hovered. Since discovering she wasn't biologically tied to the Whitmores, she'd severed contact. No affection existed between them—only mutual indifference.
Cassandra wouldn't reach out without motive.
After a beat, Evelyn answered—but kept her camera off. The Grayson estate's opulence wasn't something she wanted flaunted.
Cassandra's face filled the screen. She turned, calling out, "Father! She picked up!"
Gregory Whitmore shoved into view, face flushed. "Where the hell have you been, Evelyn? No calls, no visits—do you even remember you have a family?"
Once, Evelyn might've feigned respect. But blood ties were a lie. All pretense vanished.
"Did you need something?" she asked coolly.
Gregory's nostrils flared. "That's your tone? You vanish after dragging our name through the mud, and now wreaths and funeral bouquets are piling at our door! Trying to kill me with shame?"
Evelyn blinked. The internet had unearthed the Whitmore address fast.
Too fast.
Someone had fueled this fire deliberately.
And if they'd exposed her ties to the Whitmores...
Her marriage to Nathaniel would be next.
