Chapter 306
The interrogation room at the police station was dimly lit and claustrophobic. Two stone-faced officers sat across from Evelyn Whitmore, their expressions unyielding.
"Are you going to confess or not?" one of them demanded sharply.
Evelyn sat composed behind the small table, her voice steady. "Confess to what? I haven't done anything wrong."
The officer scowled at her defiance. "You'd get a lighter sentence if you cooperated. I've dealt with stubborn criminals like you before—they all regret it when the verdict comes down. A young woman like you should know better than to break the law and hurt others. Your family would be ashamed!"
Evelyn arched a brow. "Ever heard the phrase 'give a dog a bad name and hang him'? In all my years, I've never met officers as reckless as you. Did you even graduate from the academy? If your superiors saw how carelessly you handle cases, they'd dock your pay."
The officer's face flushed red. "Y-You—!"
His partner cleared his throat. "This is an interrogation room, Miss Whitmore. Show some respect."
Evelyn shrugged. "Fine. Then I'll exercise my right to remain silent. Talk to my lawyer when he arrives."
The second officer sighed in frustration. "Unbelievable."
Just then, a sharp knock interrupted them. Another officer stepped in, whispering something urgent to the interrogators. Their expressions darkened.
"New witnesses? Now?" one muttered.
"Since when did a straightforward case get so complicated?"
"Nathaniel Grayson and his sister are waiting for results. We were supposed to wrap this up today!"
"Just take her to the visiting room for now."
One officer turned to Evelyn. "Your lawyer's here. Let's go."
He unlocked the cuffs binding her to the table.
Evelyn rose calmly, following them to a larger room where visitors could meet detainees. Inside, her lawyer, Julian Montgomery, stood waiting—along with Nathaniel, Benjamin, Amelia, and Gabrielle. All of them watched her intently.
Her gaze swept the room, lingering for half a second before she caught herself.
Who am I kidding? He doesn’t care anymore. Not that I need him to.
Nathaniel lounged in a chair, his posture relaxed but his eyes icy as they tracked Evelyn’s cuffed hands. Then he turned to Julian with a mocking smile.
"Mr. Montgomery, you’re one of the most respected lawyers in the city. Yet here you are, defending a criminal who hired someone to commit assault. Aren’t you worried about tarnishing your reputation?"
