Chapter 112
Cassandra shot Evelyn a glare. Just as she was about to launch into another tirade, her phone's ringtone cut through the tension.
It was a video call from their father, Gregory.
Cassandra rolled her eyes dramatically and waved the phone in Evelyn's face. "Look who's calling me! Bet you never get calls from Daddy. Proves how little he cares about you."
Evelyn smirked. "If you don't answer soon, your precious daddy might hang up."
With a huff, Cassandra answered and deliberately put it on speaker. She wanted Evelyn to hear every word.
Gregory and Victoria appeared on screen, their faces lighting up at the sight of their celebrity daughter. "Cassandra, how was work today?" Gregory asked with concern. "Have you eaten?"
Cassandra pouted dramatically. "No, Daddy. Too busy working to eat."
Gregory frowned. "That's unacceptable! You must take care of yourself!"
Victoria nodded vigorously. "Listen to your father. At least drink some milk! We can't bear seeing you sick from hunger!"
Cassandra sighed theatrically. "I'm not hungry... except maybe for your famous meatballs, Daddy."
Gregory beamed. "That's easily arranged! I'll make them when you get home."
"But I'll be back so late... You'll be asleep," Cassandra whined.
"I'll wake up no matter how late it is!" Gregory promised.
"Thanks, Daddy! I knew you loved me most!" Cassandra cooed.
"Alright, we won't keep you. Come home early! I'll have those meatballs ready!" Gregory said.
Just as he was about to hang up, Cassandra stopped him. "Wait! Look who's here!"
She abruptly turned the camera toward Evelyn.
Gregory's expression darkened when he saw his disappointing younger daughter. "Evelyn? Why are you in Cassandra's car?"
Evelyn opened her mouth to respond, but Cassandra quickly turned the camera back. "Daddy, Evelyn came to interview at my company today. I hired her as my assistant. Keeping talent in the family, right?"
Gregory nodded. "Turn the camera back to your sister. I need to speak with her."
Cassandra complied reluctantly.
Gregory fixed Evelyn with a stern look. "You should be grateful Cassandra gave you this opportunity. Better than being some stranger's nanny. At least this way your stepmother and I won't worry."
Evelyn's polite smile twisted into something sharper. "Oh, I'm absolutely grateful."
After the call ended, Cassandra preened. "See that? I'll always be Daddy's favorite. No matter what I do, he'll forgive me. You? Nothing you do will ever matter."
Evelyn closed her eyes, feigning indifference.
Cassandra wasn't satisfied. "Evelyn Whitmore! No one in this world loves you!"
Evelyn's grip tightened on her water bottle. "Should I die then, just because no one loves me?"
Cassandra sneered. "No one would care if you did! Ivy League degree and what? Still ending up as my assistant. Better behave, or I'll have Daddy throw you out!"
Evelyn didn't even open her eyes. "Do your worst. I'll be waiting."
Cassandra seethed at her sister's indifference.
'Plenty of time to break her,' she thought darkly.
