Chapter 305
Sophia Bennett pulled up a chair and sat down, blinking nervously. "Nothing! I honestly don't know much! It's just... you can't eat properly, so maybe I should feed you?"
Evelyn Whitmore frowned slightly. "So you're not going to tell me?"
Sophia idolized Evelyn and couldn't bear the thought of disappointing her. After a brief hesitation, she caved.
"Fine. When I got here, I saw him walking Amelia out of the hospital. Then... she got into his car."
Evelyn's expression darkened. She stayed silent, her lips twisting into something bitter.
Sophia panicked. "Don't be mad! Please don't divorce him over this! Give him another chance—"
Evelyn snapped out of her thoughts and met Sophia's worried gaze. "I'm not angry. But if there's no love between us, why stay married?"
Sophia's lips pressed into a stubborn line. "If you leave him, I won't get to see you anymore! I don’t want her as my aunt! You're the only one I accept!"
Evelyn studied the girl’s defiant expression. "Your uncle is wealthy, powerful, and handsome. He could easily find someone better than me. You’ll learn to like her eventually."
"No!" Sophia shook her head fiercely. "No one is better than you!"
Evelyn sighed. "But Amelia—"
"Don’t say her name!" Sophia cut in, disgust twisting her features. "The last thing I want is her with Uncle Nathaniel!"
Evelyn tilted her head. "You really hate her. Why?"
Sophia scowled. "She acts so fragile, like she’s always the victim. She saved him once as a kid and has been holding it over him ever since. He hates it!"
Evelyn raised a brow. "They don’t get along?"
Sophia hesitated. "I... I don’t know for sure. But he treats her differently. That’s why people think they’re close."
Evelyn nodded slowly. "You’re right. He does treat her differently. It’s obvious."
She remembered how Nathaniel had rushed to Amelia’s side, his voice softening like she might shatter. That kind of patience—he never showed it to anyone else.
Sophia’s eyes widened with worry. "But he treats you even more differently! You’re the only one he actually tolerates!"
Tolerates? Evelyn almost laughed. Because he needs me to deal with his family. If I read too much into it, that’s my own fault.
After finishing her soup, Evelyn gently urged Sophia to go home—there wasn’t enough space for her to stay with Eleanor. Nathaniel never returned after escorting Amelia out.
By afternoon, the nurse removed Evelyn’s IV. The swelling had gone down, but faint redness remained. The doctor assured her she’d be fine with antihistamines.
Then the police walked in.
"According to your doctor, you’re cleared for discharge," one officer said, holding up a warrant. "You’re officially under arrest."
