Chapter 294
Nathaniel Grayson inclined his head with practiced elegance. "In that case, officers, would you be so kind as to arrange my confrontation with the suspect Evelyn Whitmore?"
The officers exchanged glances before escorting Nathaniel into Evelyn's hospital room. Samuel Rivers moved to follow, but the officer stationed at the door raised a stern hand to block his path.
"Apologies, Mr. Grayson. This remains an active investigation. Unrelated parties must remain outside."
Samuel's eyebrow arched. "Then why is he permitted entry?"
The officer gestured toward Nathaniel. "Mr. Rivers here is providing witness testimony. He has legal standing to confront the accused."
"And what makes you believe I'm unrelated?" Samuel's voice dropped dangerously low.
The officer blinked. "Sir... how are you involved?"
"I filed the initial police report." Samuel's calm tone carried undeniable authority. "That grants me the right to observe proceedings."
Truth be told, it had been Lucas Sinclair who'd contacted authorities upon discovering the crime scene. But Samuel had instructed the call be made in his name - a strategic move now paying dividends.
The officer hesitated, then lowered his arm in silent acquiescence.
Amelia Rivers saw her chance and stepped forward. "Officer, as the victim, I deserve to be present! Besides..." Her voice trembled as she touched her bandaged forehead. "I need my brother with me. I don't feel safe alone."
The officer wavered. Amelia's delicate beauty and visible injuries made resistance difficult. With a sigh, he permitted her entry.
Gabrielle Winslow and Benjamin Rivers immediately attempted to follow.
"Not you two," the officer snapped.
Benjamin scowled. "That's my sister and brother in there!"
The officer eyed Benjamin's designer clothes with open suspicion. "Identify yourself properly. Who exactly are these siblings of yours?"
Gabrielle smoothly interceded, pulling Benjamin aside before he could escalate the situation. She offered the officer a disarming smile. "Forgive my friend's manners. We're Amelia's family. After her car accident and now this attack... she's quite fragile. She forgot her medication, and we fear her injuries may cause complications. We'll be quick - just long enough to ensure she takes her pills."
The officer recalled Amelia's pallid complexion and reluctantly stepped aside.
