Chapter 211
Evelyn narrowed her eyes, exhaling sharply in frustration. "You probably won't believe me, but I have zero interest in Nathaniel! Being Mrs. Grayson means nothing to me. All your little schemes are just a waste of your time."
Gabrielle blinked, skepticism flashing across her face. "No interest? Then swear it—swear nothing ever happened between you two, or that you don’t feel anything for him."
Evelyn’s lips pressed into a thin line. She couldn’t. Because something had happened—something she refused to dwell on.
But that night had been beyond her control. No one would understand, and no explanation would make them believe she’d only been trying to help him. The truth was better buried.
Once their three-month arrangement ended, she’d vanish from Nathaniel’s life. That would be proof enough.
Gabrielle scoffed at her silence. "Can’t even swear to it? Funny how you claim not to care, yet you can’t deny it. People like you never walk away from luxury once they’ve tasted it."
Evelyn ignored her. Arguing was pointless.
Just then, Sophia led her horse over, frowning when she spotted Gabrielle. "I thought you were injured. Suddenly well enough to ride?"
Gabrielle’s expression softened instantly. "I rested, Sophia. Didn’t want to miss riding with everyone."
Sophia rolled her eyes. "No one’s dying to ride with you." She turned to Evelyn. "Pick a horse yet? We’re heading out soon."
Evelyn pointed to the same white stallion with the black forehead marking. "That one."
Gabrielle’s eyes widened. Is she insane?
Sophia shook her head. "That horse is trouble, Evelyn. It’s thrown riders before—broken bones, even. Pick another."
But Evelyn liked its defiance. There was fire in its eyes, a spirit that matched hers.
Gabrielle smirked. "Let her try. Maybe she’ll tame it."
Or maybe she’d fall. Either way, Gabrielle wouldn’t mind.
