Chapter 78
Evelyn gripped the steering wheel tightly as she trailed their car to the police station.
Inside the station.
The officer handed Evelyn her recovered items. "Please verify if this wallet and phone belong to you. Check thoroughly for any missing contents."
Evelyn examined both carefully. "Yes, these are mine. Everything's accounted for."
"Sign here," the officer instructed. "Be more cautious next time. Not everyone gets this lucky."
"Understood. Thank you," Evelyn replied with a grateful smile.
Margaret stood beside her like a proper lady, praising the officers' efficiency. "Your dedication is truly commendable."
Nathaniel's imposing figure loomed nearby. He'd just ended a call, his stormy gaze fixed on how naturally Evelyn interacted with his grandmother.
The process concluded smoothly. Evelyn linked arms with Margaret as they exited, discussing dinner options.
"Where would you like to eat, Grandma?"
"Anything you prefer, dear," Margaret beamed. "This is your treat after all."
Evelyn glanced at Nathaniel. "Any preferences? My treat."
His lips curved. "You're letting me choose?"
"Go ahead," she challenged.
"How about The Celestial Bloom? Their Wagyu is exceptional."
Evelyn's smile froze. The Michelin-starred restaurant's prices could bankrupt her.
'He's testing me,' she thought.
She turned to Margaret instead. "Grandma, do you enjoy spicy food? I know an authentic Thai place."
Margaret clapped excitedly. "Perfect! Let's go there."
Nathaniel's jaw tightened. 'She asked for my opinion just to disregard it? Does she really think I'd make her pay?'
As they reached the exit, Abigail came rushing toward them.
Margaret gasped. "Abigail?"
Nathaniel's expression darkened. "I told you to reflect at home. What are you doing here?"
Abigail ignored her grandmother's questioning look. Only Nathaniel's disapproval made her hesitate.
