Chapter 359
Benjamin remained in the dining room, bracing himself for Evelyn and Nathaniel's verdict.
A maid placed a steaming breakfast plate before Evelyn, whose hunger made her dive in immediately. As she devoured the bacon and eggs, she felt an intense gaze burning into her. It wasn't just a look—it felt like invisible silk threads wrapping around her, tightening with each passing second.
Her brows furrowed as she glanced up at Nathaniel. "Sir, shouldn't you be heading to the office by now?"
Nathaniel feigned irritation. "That eager to get rid of me?"
Evelyn shook her head. "Not at all. It's just—you've finished eating, and your team must be waiting. No point lingering here."
His lips thinned. "I'm in no hurry."
She suppressed an eye roll. "Fine, but could you stop staring? It's distracting."
Nathaniel arched a brow. "After you abandoned me in the study last night, don't I deserve to look my fill?"
Evelyn scoffed playfully. "History blames the concubine when emperors neglect their duties. I refuse to be your scapegoat when your staff gossips about your tardiness."
"Ridiculous!" Nathaniel actually chuckled, amused by her creativity. "No one would dare."
"They'll whisper behind your back," she countered. "And trust me, I won't be the heroine of those stories."
He pinched her cheek, torn between affection and exasperation. "Alright, to spare your reputation, I'll go. But tonight," his voice dropped, "you'll answer for this rebellion."
Evelyn merely smirked.
Rising, Nathaniel braced a hand on her chair and leaned down, his eyes demanding a farewell kiss. Evelyn hesitated—Benjamin's presence made her self-conscious. Quick-thinking, she speared a slice of ham and popped it into Nathaniel's mouth instead.
Surprise flickered across his face. Though displeased, he accepted the offering, mollified by her initiative. "Behave while I'm gone," he murmured, tousling her hair before accepting his coat from the maid and striding out.
Left alone, Evelyn sipped her milk, cheeks flaming. Across the room, Benjamin gaped.
The Nathaniel he knew was ice incarnate—calculated, detached. This version? Warm, playful, utterly besotted. The transformation was staggering.
A chill ran down Benjamin's spine. If this continued, Amelia would lose Nathaniel forever. The thought of his sister's reaction terrified him.
Finishing her meal, Evelyn approached. Benjamin stood his ground. "Do your worst. I'm ready."
