Chapter 469
Her faith wouldn't permit ending the pregnancy.
Evelyn's life had been marked by hardship since childhood. Passed around like an unwanted object, no one wanted responsibility for her.
After countless upheavals, she finally found refuge in a convent's foster care. Raised by nuns on simple meals, she never took vows but absorbed their teachings deeply.
That night's choice had been hers alone. The child bore no blame.
She wanted this baby.
When Amelia entered the office carrying her son, Gabrielle rushed forward like greeting family.
"Amelia! You made it! That must've been exhausting with the baby."
Amelia's smile softened. "Not at all. I brought the stroller—left it by the door. Were you waiting long?"
Gabrielle gave a strained smile. "Not too long. Gave me extra time with Samuel."
Amelia instantly recognized her brother's neglect. Her gaze swept the untouched lunchbox on the coffee table before landing on Samuel's bent head.
"Samuel," she chided gently, "Gabrielle went through such trouble. The least you could do is eat."
Samuel finally looked up. "Not hungry yet."
Amelia wouldn't relent. "Work can wait. You're having lunch now, or I'll be cross!"
Defeated by his sister's concern, Samuel sighed. "Fine. I'll wash up first."
As he disappeared into the private bathroom, Gabrielle squeezed Amelia's arm. "Thank you. For coming...for trying with Samuel."
Amelia adjusted the baby in her arms. "Don't mention it. You're practically family already."
Gabrielle's eyes shimmered. Amelia always had her back—she'd walk through fire for this friendship.
"Oh!" Gabrielle suddenly remembered. "Did you see? Evelyn's working as Samuel's secretary now!"
Amelia feigned unease. "I noticed. But she's probably just here to work."
"You're too forgiving!" Gabrielle huffed. "After everything she did to you? Don't worry—I'll keep watch."
She tickled the baby's chin before turning serious. "Listen, you and Nathaniel have Joey now. Your wedding's coming. We can't let Evelyn interfere again."
