Chapter 283
"Don't be absurd! That man clearly holds a distinguished position and likely comes from a family background that perfectly matches Miss Amelia. They're practically made for each other!"
Evelyn overheard the nurses' conversation as she walked past their station. She could easily piece together what must have occurred. Some creep had been stalking Amelia, prompting her to call Nathaniel for help. By the time Nathaniel arrived, the stalker had fled.
Police officers were now reviewing hospital surveillance footage to identify potential suspects. The nurses had mentioned Amelia was in Ward 302, just around the next corner. Evelyn turned the corner and immediately spotted the ward number.
The door stood slightly ajar, revealing a crowded room filled with officers. From her vantage point, Evelyn had a clear view inside without needing to approach closer.
Amelia trembled against Nathaniel's chest, her shoulders shaking visibly. "Nathaniel, I'm terrified..."
Nathaniel wrapped a protective arm around her, his other hand gently stroking her back. "You're safe now. Just tell the officers what happened. Can you describe the man who followed you?"
Since Amelia couldn't visit the police station due to her hospitalization, the officers had come to take her statement at the hospital.
Nathaniel's calming presence seemed to steady Amelia. She took a deep breath before describing to the officers: "He wore... a striped shirt and glasses. Overweight. About one-point-seven meters tall..."
The lead officer nodded while writing. "Got it, Miss Rivers. We'll catch this guy, I promise."
"Thank you," Amelia murmured, instinctively pressing closer to Nathaniel as if he alone could shield her from the world's dangers.
"Please stay with me, Nathaniel. Don't leave me alone..."
"I'm not going anywhere."
Nathaniel whispered more reassurances as the officers finished their work. "We'll take our leave now, Mr. Grayson. You'll be the first to know about any developments."
Nathaniel gave a brief nod. "Gabrielle, please see the officers out."
Gabrielle stepped forward graciously. "Thank you for your help, officers. This way please. Safe travels."
Having confirmed nothing serious had happened, Evelyn quietly turned to leave. She'd seen enough.
"Evelyn! Is that you?" Gabrielle's sharp voice cut through the hallway as she spotted a familiar figure walking away. She hurried after Evelyn, confirming her suspicion.
Evelyn faced Gabrielle calmly. "Good evening, Miss Winslow."
Gabrielle's gaze flickered between Evelyn and the partially open door where Amelia still clung to Nathaniel. A smug smile spread across her face. "You saw everything, didn't you? I warned you Amelia's return would put you in your place!"
Evelyn's lips curled slightly. She'd never held any real position in Nathaniel's life to begin with. What difference did it make?
Gabrielle crossed her arms triumphantly. "They've known each other since childhood. That kind of bond can't be broken by some temporary distraction like you."
Recognizing Gabrielle's attempt to provoke her, Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "Don't you have better things to do than meddle in other people's affairs?"
Gabrielle's expression soured when she failed to elicit the expected reaction. "Hmph! Just wait until Nathaniel discards you. I hope you won't make too pathetic a scene when it happens!"
"And who exactly are you speaking to?" A smooth, masculine voice interrupted from behind Evelyn.
