Chapter 147
Even the chauffeur and Sebastian were on Evelyn's payroll.
Cassandra shot Evelyn a disdainful glance, rolling her eyes dramatically. If she hadn't accidentally picked up Seraphina's phone, she would never have dragged her provincial sister to Newmoon Group's headquarters. Just being in the same space with Evelyn made Cassandra feel her social status plummeting.
The sleek black sedan soon pulled up before Newmoon Group's towering glass skyscraper.
Sebastian exited first. Without hesitation, he moved to Evelyn's side and opened her door with practiced ease. "After you, Miss Whitmore."
Evelyn stepped out with effortless grace, as if this VIP treatment was her birthright. Cassandra's lips twisted in irritation.
'He only opened her door because it was closer,' Cassandra reassured herself. 'It's not special treatment.'
But her pride couldn't stomach being upstaged. Instead of exiting from her own side, she scooted across the leather seats toward Evelyn's vacated spot. Just as she reached for the handle, Sebastian slammed the door shut without warning.
Cassandra had no choice but to exit from her original side like some commoner.
Sebastian led them through the gleaming lobby. The elevator ride to the executive floor was silent except for Cassandra's nervous foot-tapping. When they reached the president's office, Sebastian knocked twice before announcing, "Miss Montgomery, Miss Cassandra and Miss Evelyn have arrived."
The office was a study in modern power. Behind an expansive mahogany desk sat Seraphina Montgomery, reviewing documents. Her chestnut hair cascaded over one shoulder in a sleek low ponytail. Gold-rimmed glasses perched on her aristocratic nose, reflecting the morning light.
Sebastian's duty fulfilled, he retreated to a plush sofa to observe the unfolding drama.
Seraphina looked up, her gaze immediately locking onto Evelyn. The lenses of her glasses flashed like twin mirrors.
Cassandra noticed the attention and deliberately stepped in front of Evelyn, flashing her most dazzling smile. "Miss Montgomery, what an honor. I'm Cassandra Whitmore."
Seraphina gave a perfunctory nod. "Miss Cassandra. On our call, you expressed interest in being the face of our new product line?"
"Absolutely," Cassandra gushed. "Collaborating with Newmoon Group would be a dream come true."
A faint smile touched Seraphina's lips. "Excellent. My assistant will show you our latest collection. As ambassador, you'll need thorough product knowledge."
"Of course!"
Cassandra's smile faltered. This wasn't the warm reception she'd expected. They'd barely arrived and were already being shuffled off? And why was Seraphina so much colder in person?
When the secretary appeared to escort her, Cassandra turned to find Evelyn still seated. "Evelyn! Aren't you coming?" she snapped.
Seraphina answered instead. "Miss Evelyn will remain. We have matters to discuss."
Cassandra blinked. "But...she's my assistant. I need her with me."
Seraphina's expression remained neutral, but her tone turned glacial. "My staff will attend to your every need."
Swallowing her frustration, Cassandra had no choice but to follow the secretary. 'What could Seraphina possibly want with that country mouse?' she fumed silently. 'Probably just thanking her again for returning that stupid phone.'
The moment the door clicked shut, Seraphina sprang from her chair. She rushed to Evelyn's side and began massaging her shoulders with practiced hands. "Boss! You finally decided to grace us with your presence!"
