Chapter 422

Evelyn wasn't the least bit intimidated by Cassandra's outburst. She stifled another yawn, clearly finding the entire situation tedious. With a cool smile, she stated, "Frankly, I couldn't care less about being welcome here. I'm only here to reclaim my engagement gifts."

The mention of gifts made Cassandra stiffen. Her face twisted in outrage. "How dare you claim those gifts? They don't belong to you!"

Evelyn arched an eyebrow. "Don't belong to me? Correct me if I'm wrong, but those gifts came from my husband, Nathaniel. That makes them mine by right."

The words 'my husband' sent Cassandra into fresh rage. 'How dare she call Nathaniel her husband? He was meant to be mine! If only this scheming witch hadn't stolen him away!'

Her fury mounting, Cassandra jabbed a finger at Evelyn. "Evelyn Whitmore, I've had enough of your nonsense! Nathaniel gave those gifts to me, not you! Everyone knows they're rightfully mine! You stole my fiancé, you shameless gold-digger, and now you have the audacity to demand the gifts too? I swear, if you push me—"

Cassandra would rather die than surrender those gifts. After losing Nathaniel, they were her last lifeline. Each piece was worth a fortune—enough to sustain her now that her acting career was ruined after offending director Vincent Blackwood.

'Over my dead body will she take them,' Cassandra seethed.

"Cassandra, what's all this shouting about?" Victoria emerged, drawn by the commotion.

Cassandra jerked her chin toward Evelyn. "Look who's crawled back. She's here to steal my engagement gifts now."

Victoria's reaction mirrored her daughter's. Storming forward, she glared at Evelyn. "Have you no shame? First you steal Nathaniel, now you want the gifts too? Your father would never allow this!"

Evelyn remained unfazed. "I don't need permission to reclaim what's mine. The gifts belong to me as Nathaniel's wife."

Victoria scoffed. "Greedy little thing, aren't you? You've already won Nathaniel—must you take everything?"

'Greedy?' Evelyn nearly laughed. 'These two hypocrites would rob me blind given the chance.'

A knowing smile curved her lips. "Aunt Victoria, I've never taken what wasn't mine. But make no mistake—I will fight for what rightfully belongs to me. Those gifts came from my husband, and as his wife, I'm taking them back."
