Chapter 447
Compared to the overly rehearsed responses from previous candidates, Evelyn's answer was refreshingly straightforward.
A sudden realization struck Oliver. That voice... why does it sound so familiar? He glanced up, and his eyes widened in shock. Evelyn Whitmore?!
Evelyn offered him a polite smile.
Oliver quickly schooled his expression, though his frown deepened. He reminded himself to stay cautious—after all, her history with both Nathaniel and Amelia was far from ideal.
"Miss Whitmore, what are you doing here?"
"Isn't it obvious? I'm here for the interview."
Oliver's frown turned into outright disapproval. "You want to be Mister Nathaniel’s executive secretary?"
Evelyn nodded without hesitation. "That’s right."
Oliver had no intention of hiring her. He suspected she was here to stir trouble for the Graysons, so he dismissed her coldly. "Given your past, I doubt Mister Nathaniel would approve of you in this position. You may leave. Next!"
Evelyn didn’t move. "And how exactly do you know what Mister Nathaniel would want?" she asked, her tone still pleasant.
Before Oliver could respond, she added, "Don’t tell me it’s just a hunch."
Oliver clenched his jaw.
Evelyn tilted her head. "That doesn’t sound very professional, does it? Shouldn’t an interviewer evaluate candidates based on their qualifications rather than personal bias?"
Oliver scoffed. "And what would you do in my position?"
Evelyn straightened. "At the very least, you should review my resume. If I’m unqualified, then give me a valid reason for rejection."
Oliver’s expression darkened. Unable to argue, he grudgingly flipped through her file.
Impressive academic background. Worked at a Fortune 500 company. There’s nothing here I can use to disqualify her.
He looked up sharply. "Why did you apply for this job again?"
Evelyn smirked. "The salary is excellent."
Oliver sneered. "So it’s just about the money? We don’t need someone with such shallow motives."
Evelyn arched a brow. "Then why do you work here? Out of pure passion? If money isn’t a factor, maybe you should volunteer your services for free. Show Mister Nathaniel how dedicated you are."
Oliver’s face flushed with anger. No one had ever spoken to him like this. "You have no respect!"
Evelyn chuckled. "They say life is a mirror. If you’re questioning my manners, perhaps you should examine your own."
Oliver gritted his teeth. "Your attitude is unacceptable for this role. Leave. Now."
Evelyn remained seated. "There’s no one else waiting. I’m the last candidate. Face it—you won’t find a 'perfect' secretary. Might as well pick me."
Oliver glared, debating whether to call security. But considering her past ties to Nathaniel, causing a scene might backfire.
After a tense silence, he stood abruptly. "Wait here."
He stormed out to call Nathaniel.
Nathaniel was in his office, skimming through emails when the call came. His fingers stilled as Oliver relayed the situation.
"Evelyn Whitmore is here for the interview?" His voice was dangerously calm.
"Yes. She refuses to leave unless she gets the job. Mister Nathaniel, I’ve never encountered someone so shameless."
Nathaniel’s lips curved slightly. "Bring her to my office."
Oliver hesitated. "Sir—"
"Now."
"...Yes, Mister Nathaniel."
