Chapter 279
Evelyn licked her lips thoughtfully. "There's a slice of cake I baked for myself in the fridge back home."
She turned to Nathaniel with hopeful eyes. "Could you ask Lucas to bring it for me? I'm having a sudden craving."
Nathaniel's expression darkened instantly. "That's all you want?"
Evelyn nodded casually. "Yeah. Just the cake."
His jaw tensed visibly as he studied her face. After a heavy pause, he leaned closer. "If there's anything you want to know, ask me now. I'll tell you everything."
"Nope." Evelyn deliberately avoided his gaze, staring out the window while feigning a yawn.
She had no right to interrogate him. Their marriage was temporary anyway - prying would only make her seem intrusive.
Nathaniel's fingers twitched at his sides. If not for her bandaged, swollen hands, he would've grabbed her shoulders and shaken some sense into her.
This infuriating woman!
Gritting his teeth, he rubbed his temples in frustration before gently taking her injured hand in his. "Has the swelling gone down? Does it still hurt?"
Evelyn flinched at the sudden contact, pulling her hand slightly. "It's manageable."
The temperature in the car seemed to drop several degrees. Nathaniel's lips pressed into a thin line.
No one could kill the mood quite like Evelyn Whitmore.
With a resigned sigh, he tucked a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "Relax. I won't let anything happen to you."
Evelyn turned her face away, closing her eyes. "Yeah, you won't let me die..." Her voice trailed off. 'At least not during these three months.'
