Chapter 241
"Is he still on the phone with his precious darling?"
Evelyn knew exactly who Nathaniel was taking orders from—it couldn't be anyone other than Amelia. Delaying the divestment from the Winslows was clearly a courtesy extended toward her.
It made perfect sense and shouldn't surprise anyone.
After a brief pause, Evelyn turned to Lucas. "I'll go with you, but could you wait a moment?"
"Wait? For what?" Lucas frowned in confusion. "May I ask how long and why, ma'am?"
Evelyn's expression remained composed as she answered, "Until I settle things with Gabrielle."
Lucas grew even more perplexed. A sense of unease crept over him, but before he could inquire further, Evelyn was already walking toward Gabrielle, who lay injured on the bed.

Evelyn's expression softened, her tone laced with apology. "Her injury isn't entirely my fault, but I do bear some responsibility. My stubborn refusal to help her fly a kite led to her fall. I should take accountability for that."
Benjamin's defensive stance relaxed slightly at Evelyn's admission. His guard lowered, though his brows remained furrowed in conflict. "You don't need to blame yourself. It wasn't solely your doing."
Truthfully, Evelyn bore little responsibility for Gabrielle's accident. Benjamin had seen Evelyn and Sophia flying their kite in the distance when it happened. Besides, given what Gabrielle had done to Evelyn, her reluctance to assist was understandable.
Gabrielle, however, silently cursed Benjamin for his stupidity. Anyone with half a brain could see Evelyn was up to something—the proper response should've been keeping his guard up against her hidden agenda!
Feigning exaggerated pain, Gabrielle sneered, "Don't bother, Evelyn. You're not responsible for my injury. You had every right to refuse helping me. I don't blame you—only my own bad luck..."
Evelyn stepped past Benjamin toward the bed. Meeting Gabrielle's pained expression, she insisted firmly, "But I must."
Gabrielle's frown deepened as she eyed Evelyn warily. A pitiful look of helplessness crossed her face. "Didn't I already say—"
