Chapter 108

The maid paused and replied, "Madam Margaret is departing, ma'am."

'Grandma is leaving?' Evelyn thought.

A wave of dread washed over her. She feared Abigail's actions yesterday had deeply hurt Margaret. Just then, she heard her name being called softly.

"Evelyn."

She glanced up to see Margaret approaching her with slow, deliberate steps.

"Grandma, I heard you're leaving," Evelyn said.

Margaret offered a gentle smile and sighed. "Yes, I must return to your grandfather. That stubborn old man refuses to listen, even after his surgery. He ignores the doctor's orders when I'm not there, so I need to keep an eye on him."

"I understand." Evelyn didn't press her to stay once she knew the reason. "Take care of yourself, Grandma. Have a safe trip."

Margaret nodded and took Evelyn's hand. "Evelyn, I know you've endured a lot since marrying Nathaniel. Abigail went too far. Don't worry—once she's released, I'll have someone escort her to her grandfather. He'll discipline her properly. I won't let her stay here and cause more trouble for you two."

It was rare for a grandmother who adored her granddaughter to acknowledge her cruelty.

Evelyn was moved by Margaret's fairness. "Thank you for understanding."

"Oh, and Evelyn?" Margaret added with a knowing smile. "After I leave, you and Nathaniel must keep working hard, too!"

'Working hard?' Evelyn blinked in confusion.

Then, catching the mischievous glint in Margaret's eyes, she realized what she meant. Her cheeks flushed instantly.

Still, she forced a laugh. "Oh—aha—don't worry, we will!"

Margaret beamed. "Wonderful! I'll be waiting for good news!"

Evelyn murmured, "Okay..."

She knew Margaret would be disappointed. There would be no good news between her and Nathaniel. By the time Margaret returned, their contract would likely be ending, and she'd have to leave.

Nathaniel had instructed Lucas to take Margaret to the airport.

Since Margaret had been nothing but kind to her, Evelyn decided to accompany them to see her off.

After bidding Margaret farewell at the airport, Lucas handed her a job application form in the car.

"Miss Whitmore," he said, "Sir arranged this for you. He knows you'll need work after graduating."

Evelyn arched a brow, eyeing the form. "What kind of job is this?"

Lucas started the engine. "Fill this out first. HR will assign a suitable position based on your preferences."

Working at Grayson Group was a golden opportunity—but Evelyn wasn't interested.

Then it struck her. For the next three months, she'd be free from Nathaniel's control.

'Why not take advantage of this?' she thought.

She tossed the form aside. "I won't fill it out. Just give me whatever pays the most."

Lucas couldn't help but admire her bluntness. He chuckled. "Alright. I'll arrange everything and take you to get started."

"No," Evelyn insisted. "Let's go now. I have nothing better to do anyway."

"...Alright."

With that, Lucas drove toward one of Grayson Group's subsidiaries.
