Chapter 361
It all started with Nathaniel's sudden shift in behavior toward her.
Evelyn dismissed the concern with a wave. "Don't worry about it. I'll grab lunch myself."
Theodore hesitated. "Where are you headed, ma'am? Should I arrange for the driver?"
She slipped on her shoes by the entrance. "No need. I could use the fresh air."
He still looked uneasy. "Did you bring your phone? Is it charged? Mister Nathaniel will want to reach you if—"
The memory of Nathaniel's frantic search after her disappearance still haunted him. The man had nearly torn the city apart.
Evelyn cut him off. "Relax, I won't lose it. Go back to your work, Theodore."
With a reluctant bow, he conceded. "Be careful, ma'am."
She stepped outside, humming softly.
Benjamin had overheard the exchange. The moment Evelyn left, he abandoned his game and jogged after her.
Once past the estate gates, he caught up. "Hey, Evelyn. Where are you going?"
She ignored him, strolling toward the bus stop.
Annoyed, he blocked her path. "I asked you a question. Are you ignoring me on purpose?"
Evelyn arched a brow. "Since when do I report to you?"
His confidence wavered under her sharp gaze. "I just—you said you'd deal with me. How long are you going to keep this up?"
She sighed. "What's there to deal with? You didn't do it."
Benjamin blinked. "You... believe me? Then why make me stay?"
She rolled her eyes. "Would you rather be stuck at home under surveillance?"
Realization hit him. If he'd gone back, his brother's men would've hounded him day and night.
Evelyn walked past him, and this time, he followed quietly. "Why trust me? After everything?"
She smirked. "Oh, I don't trust you. But you're not smart enough to pull off those articles."
His face darkened. "Are you calling me stupid?"
She glanced back, amused. "I am curious, though. Why take the blame for something you didn't do?"
