Chapter 412
Benjamin had just finished grilling a batch of his famous honey-glazed chicken wings. He sprinkled his secret spice blend with a flourish, certain Evelyn would be impressed by his culinary skills.
But when he turned toward the gazebo, it stood empty.
"Where did everyone go?"
He distinctly remembered Amelia pulling Evelyn aside for a private conversation earlier. Now both women had vanished.
Frowning, Benjamin balanced the tray of wings carefully as he headed indoors to search for them.
After combing through the mansion without success, he spotted Samuel and Amelia sitting together in the lounge. Amelia looked unusually pale, leaning heavily against her brother.
"Amelia, have you seen Evelyn?" Benjamin asked, approaching with his prized chicken wings.
Amelia opened her mouth to respond but broke into a coughing fit instead. Samuel's protective arm tightened around her shoulders.
"Why are you looking for her?" Samuel snapped, his voice sharp with accusation.
Benjamin froze under his brother's glare. "I just... made these wings for Evelyn to try..."
Samuel's expression darkened. "Your sister is clearly unwell, and all you care about is feeding that woman?"
The words struck Benjamin like a physical blow. He finally noticed Amelia's ashen complexion. "Amelia! Are you sick? Did you catch a chill outside?"
Amelia waved weakly. "It's... nothing..."
Samuel's grip on her tightened. "Didn't you see how Evelyn was tormenting Amelia outside? How can you think about feeding her when your own sister needs you?"
Benjamin's eyes widened. "Evelyn was harassing Amelia?"
Samuel's jaw clenched. "She forced Amelia to kneel, then kicked her to the ground. That's why she's like this now!"
"That can't be true," Benjamin protested. "Amelia, what really happened? I saw you two talking peacefully."
Amelia lowered her gaze, silent tears tracking down her cheeks. She shook her head slightly, as if unwilling to cause trouble.
But Samuel had no such reservations. "Evelyn assaulted her. Right in our own garden."
Benjamin's hands tightened around the tray. "Evelyn would never do that. There must be some mistake!"
Amelia's head jerked up in shock. Her little brother - always her staunchest defender - was taking Evelyn's side?
