Chapter 45
Evelyn watched Sophia's starstruck expression with amusement. "I knew choosing you as my idol was the right decision! You're literally the only person who can drag my uncle out of his high castle to actually experience normal human activities!"
The corner of Evelyn's mouth twitched in a strained smile.
It wasn't her charm doing the work - just their contractual agreement. Since Nathaniel needed her to play the loving fiancée for his grandmother, he had to tolerate these public outings.
Nathaniel's icy glare landed on Sophia. "Weren't you supposed to be reflecting on your mistakes at home? Who gave you permission to leave?"
Sophia stuck out her tongue defiantly. "Sulking at home won't fix my ruined wedding! My fiancé cheated on me - isn't that depressing enough? And you want me locked up alone with my thoughts?"
Ignoring her dramatics, Nathaniel turned his attention to her companions.
Benjamin greeted him respectfully. "Good evening, Nathaniel."
Nathaniel gave a curt nod. "Explain why you're all together."
Gabrielle tucked a curl behind her ear with practiced grace. "Benjamin and I were shopping when we ran into Sophia."
Nathaniel merely hummed in response, his expression unreadable.
Gabrielle's eyes lit up at the spread of food. "You've just started eating, and we're starving. Mind if we join?"
Instead of answering, Nathaniel looked pointedly at Evelyn, who was too busy savoring her dumpling to notice.
When she finally caught his gaze, she shrugged. "Fine by me."
It was his money anyway. She was just here for the free meal.
At her approval, Nathaniel gestured to the empty chairs. "Sit."
Gabrielle's smile faltered momentarily at their silent exchange.
Sophia immediately claimed the seat beside Evelyn while Gabrielle smoothly positioned herself next to Nathaniel. A waiter brought an extra chair for Benjamin.
After ordering, Gabrielle extended a perfectly manicured hand toward Evelyn. "I'm Gabrielle Winslow. Nathaniel and I go way back."
Evelyn took a sip of water. "Evelyn Whitmore. Nice to meet you."
Sophia bounced in her seat. "I've been meaning to ask - how are you so good at dice games? It was insane watching you wipe the floor with everyone!"
Before Evelyn could respond, Benjamin scoffed. "You're idolizing her over dice skills? That's pathetic, Sophia."
Sophia's face scrunched in annoyance. "Back off! She's my queen and I'll admire whoever I want! Who's your so-called goddess anyway?"
Benjamin puffed out his chest. "Ever heard of Luna Sterling? One of the world's top hackers? That's my future wife right there. When I find her, I'm going to spoil her rotten!"
Evelyn choked violently on her food.
Sophia panicked. "Are you okay?"
Nathaniel was at Evelyn's side in an instant, thrusting a napkin at her. "Spit it out. Nobody's stealing your food." His tone was sharp, but his actions were oddly gentle.
Gabrielle stared, shocked by Nathaniel's uncharacteristic concern.
Benjamin rolled his eyes. "Such an obvious act."
Gabrielle frowned. "She's clearly choking!"
"On what? A tiny dumpling? Please." Benjamin sneered. "Just attention-seeking behavior."
Gabrielle opened her mouth to protest but Evelyn stood abruptly. "Restroom. Now."
Gabrielle rose smoothly. "I'll come with you."
