Chapter 226
The tiny ear stud wouldn't hold fingerprints—not after being on the horse's body for so long.
There were no surveillance cameras in the woods. No hard evidence to prove Gabrielle was behind it.
Yet the truth hung in the air, undeniable.
Nathaniel didn’t respond to Gabrielle. Instead, he reached out and adjusted Evelyn’s jacket.
"It's cold. Let’s go back to the hotel."
At Silver Peaks Ranch Resort.
The doctor examined the snake bite on Evelyn’s arm and commended their quick first aid. Though the snake wasn’t venomous, the broadleaf plant they’d used had worked as a natural antiseptic.
Nathaniel exhaled in relief.
"Keep the wound dry," the doctor advised before excusing himself.
Once he left, Evelyn asked Sophia to fetch plastic wrap from the kitchen. She secured it over the bite, ensuring it wouldn’t get wet.
Now, she could finally shower.
Dirt clung to her skin, her hair gritty with dust. The thought of sleeping like this was unbearable.
Nathaniel watched her movements, arms crossed as he leaned against the bathroom doorframe.
"Need help?"
Evelyn shot him a look. "How generous of you. But no, thanks."
He stepped closer, his voice low. "I insist. I’m very… thorough."
Her cheeks burned. "That sounds inappropriate."
Nathaniel feigned innocence. "I meant washing your back. What were you thinking?"
She sputtered. "You—!"
If she couldn’t outwit him, she’d outrun him. She bolted into the bathroom and slammed the door.
Since when had Nathaniel become so shameless?
His laughter followed her. Teasing her had become a habit—one he enjoyed far too much.
Sophia stood frozen, wide-eyed.
"Uncle Nathaniel, I never pegged you for the flirty type. I was starting to think you were allergic to romance!"
His amusement vanished. A sharp glare silenced her.
"Stay with her. I have business to attend to."
Sophia snapped to attention. "Yes, sir! She won’t leave my sight!"
