Chapter 386

Evelyn's lowered gaze only fueled Cassandra's arrogance. "How should we punish you? That depends entirely on my mood and how sincerely you apologize."

Victoria sighed dramatically, placing a gentle hand on her daughter's arm. "Let it go, Cassandra. Evelyn is still your sister after all. We shouldn't be too harsh."

Turning to Evelyn with false warmth, Victoria continued, "Darling, you've stolen Cassandra's rightful place as Mrs. Grayson for far too long. But we're willing to overlook your childish mistakes if you simply vacate the position gracefully. Pack your things and leave Nathaniel's life forever. Promise never to interfere between them again, and we'll consider the matter closed."

"But Mother!" Cassandra protested petulantly.

Victoria shot her a warning look. "For your father's sake, Cassandra. Think of Gregory."

Understanding flashed in Cassandra's eyes. Removing Evelyn from the Grayson estate was the priority - there would be time for revenge later.

Gregory watched his wife's performance with misty eyes. "Victoria, I can't thank you enough for your generosity toward my ungrateful daughter after everything she's done to you and Cassandra."

"Oh darling, we're family!" Victoria simpered, though everyone except Gregory and Cassandra saw through her act.

Gregory's guilt transformed into rage. "Well? Aren't you going to thank your aunt for her kindness, you wretched girl? Don't test our patience - take this chance or face the consequences!"

Evelyn rose gracefully and bowed. "Thank you, Aunt Victoria, for your mercy. I'm truly grateful for this opportunity to make amends. I'll gather my belongings immediately."

The trio stared in shock. Victoria had expected dramatic resistance, not this docile surrender. She'd envisioned dragging Evelyn out kicking and screaming to highlight her own saintly patience.

Evelyn tilted her head innocently when met with silence. "Is something wrong? Would you prefer I stay to care for Cassandra as penance?"

Cassandra recovered first. "Absolutely not! You'll leave today after explaining everything to Nathaniel. And don't you dare lie about what happened!"

"Of course," Evelyn agreed. "Though he's working now. Shall I interrupt his important meeting? He does get quite cross when disturbed. Might take it out on all of us later..."

Cassandra and Victoria exchanged uncertain glances.

"Fine!" Cassandra snapped. "Wait until he returns. But start packing now - the moment he hears your confession, you're out!"
