Chapter 277
Nathaniel paused, watching Evelyn's reaction to Amelia's words. He knew the young woman had grown up in rural isolation with minimal connection to the Whitmores, but if she desired to see them, he would arrange it.
"Appreciate the thought, but I don't consider myself to have any family," Evelyn stated flatly.
Amelia blinked in surprise. "Oh... I'm so sorry, Evelyn. I didn't realize—"
"Don't worry about it." Evelyn's lips curved slightly. Truthfully, having no family was preferable to being tied to people like the Whitmores.
Touched by Evelyn's gracious response, Amelia stepped closer and gently grasped one of Evelyn's bandaged hands. "You're so kind-hearted. Isn't it strange how we both wound up hospitalized on the day we met? Please think of me as your sister now. If you need anything at all—"
She cradled the swollen hand carefully, emotions warring between amusement and concern. "They may hurt, but your hands look absolutely adorable like this! Like little marshmallows!"
Evelyn studied Amelia's affectionate gestures silently before glancing down at her own hands. A realization struck her sharply. She'd confirmed no exposure to obvious allergens before her reaction—the only person besides Nathaniel who'd touched her hands was Amelia. Twice.
First at Silver Moon Estate's gates, then again just now. That initial contact had made her uncomfortable, but she'd been too polite to refuse the second time. Could this sweet-faced woman have done something to her?
"At least we can keep each other company during our hospital stay!" Amelia beamed.
Evelyn's gaze remained thoughtful as she examined Amelia's guileless expression.
Sophia Bennett interjected sharply, "Hospitals aren't social clubs. The doctor ordered two days' complete rest for Evelyn. She won't be entertaining visitors."
Amelia flushed. "Of course... How thoughtless of me."
"Because you're practically a permanent resident with your delicate constitution," Sophia retorted bluntly.
Amelia's doe eyes shimmered as she lowered her head like a chastened child.
Nathaniel's expression darkened. "Mind your manners, Sophia."
Sophia pressed her lips together. "I'm not wrong."
Checking her watch, Amelia lifted her head with a soft smile. "I should return before my family worries. I've taken enough of Evelyn's time."
Nathaniel gave a curt nod.
After bidding Evelyn farewell, Amelia turned toward the door. At the threshold, she paused helplessly. "Oh dear... I've forgotten the way back. Nathaniel, would you mind—"
Before he could move, a swollen hand clumsily seized his.
Nathaniel stilled, turning to find Evelyn gripping him with unexpected determination burning in her eyes.
