Chapter 0428

He glares at me, struggling to hide his irritation.

“You’re missing the point, Luc. This isn’t something we can shoot our way out of. Do you not get that? He’s been planning this for a long time. Whatever it is. Seraphina wasn’t his first victim, and Hannah won’t be his last. Seraphina mentioned others in that prison. We still don’t know what he’s after.”

“At first, we thought it was me. Then he targeted your mate. And now there’s Evelyn. That bastard has manipulated her, and she can’t even see it. Levi is using her, and she’s just going along with it because he’s convinced her he’s keeping her safe.”

“So you want to help her?”

I scowl. “I’m saying I need time to think. There’s more than one thing going on in this pack, isn’t there?” I snap, thinking of the little Lycan fast asleep in his crib upstairs. Shifting in his sleep—I didn’t think it was possible, but Evrin did it.

“Where’s Alexander?”

“Last I saw him, he was talking to Sebastian. Said he needed to speak with his Betas. He’ll be back soon.”

I nod.

“I know I’m an ass, but if you need to talk, I’m listening.” Luc leans back into the couch. “Maybe I can help.”

“It’s nothing.”

He raises an eyebrow. “You’re a terrible liar. You know that, right?”

“And you can be incredibly annoying! Even worse when you haven’t killed anyone.”

“Think of it as keeping me sane. It’s getting harder to be who I am. I’m a Hunter. I used to go out every night. Being here, around Hannah, you, even Brianna… it’s making it impossible to be the man I was raised to be.”

“See? Not all Lycans are monsters.”

He smirks at that.

“So that’s why you want to go after Levi? You need to kill?”

He nods. “I need bloodshed. Hunters thrive on it.”

“Theodore doesn’t.”

“You sure about that?”

“He’s not a killer.”

“He spends a lot of time at the hospital, doesn’t he? Maybe he thrives differently. He wouldn’t make a great Hunter—too calm. But there’s something in him. Good diversion, by the way.”

“I wasn’t trying to divert you.”

“But you did. You might suck at lying, but you’re good at digging. So, what’s on your mind?” I shake my head.

“Come on. I shared something. It’s only fair you do too.”

“Evelyn?” I let out a breath.

“She linked me in her sleep. No one’s ever done that. It was strange. I felt everything she was feeling. Then when she woke up, it was gone. Like she didn’t know she was doing it, but also like she did.”

“Like her mind connected to you on its own?”

I nod.

“Almost like it wasn’t her, but someone else?”

I nod again.

“You have Nyx because you’re an Alpha. Same as Alexander with Titan. Evrin has his, and no doubt Logan will too when it’s time.” He pauses. “Wait, what? Evrin has who?”

“His Lycan spirit.” He smirks. “I thought that was obvious after he shifted.”

Nyx stays silent. I feel her pulling back, though she has nowhere to hide.

‘You knew, didn’t you?’ I snap at her.

‘I didn’t want to worry you.’

“She doesn’t carry Alpha genes,” Luc continues. “Because you’re the last female Alpha.” He twists the ring on his finger. “You’re an only child, right? Besides Seraphina.”

“Yes. Only child from my mother.”

“If she had siblings, you’d know.” He spins the ring faster. He started doing that after I told him to keep his guns out of sight.

“Did your mother have any siblings?”

“I don’t know. I don’t remember. I just remember Dominic. He was raised as my brother, but he was really my uncle… my father’s brother. I don’t remember anyone from my mother’s side. Pretty sure there was no one. Ironically, the best person to ask would be Theodore. He’s been researching my family for years. Is that what you think? That somehow Evelyn is family? Like a cousin or something?”
