Chapter 0387

“Why did you sell that child to Humans?”

My gaze shifts to Lucas Adler. Back then, I felt no remorse for what I did to his daughter. It was pure retaliation. I had no issue tormenting someone that way. It simply had to be done. Now… Now I see the cruelty. I killed a mother and her unborn pup in the process. She wasn’t the first. I took a child without hesitation and handed her to the vilest beings on Earth. Humans.

“Because I’m a monster.” I whisper. I had become so vicious without ever pausing to reflect until this moment. I nod at both of them. “I deserve death. I just want to know when.”

Alexander glances over his shoulder at Lucas, who gives a slight nod.

“Athena will decide that.” Alexander states. “Though personally, I’d love to let my Wolves hunt you.”

Being torn apart while still alive wasn’t something to anticipate. I started wishing there had been poison in that cup.

Alexander crouches down in front of me. “I want you to extract every bit of information you can from Evelyn.”

I still couldn’t believe she had betrayed me. Everything she said and did seemed genuine. But now, after everything Athena revealed, I see it clearly. Evelyn was nothing but a liar.

“I’ll try.”

“You’ll do more than try. Your life depends on it.” Lucas snarls.

“Right.” I lower my eyes. “And if I don’t?”

“I think you know the answer.” Lucas replies.

“So you’ll kill me if I fail, and you might still kill me even if I succeed.”

“Correct.” Lucas smiles coldly. “Glad we understand each other.”

Alexander unties my hands and pulls a protein bar from his pocket. “Eat. If you’re going to do this, I can’t have you starving.” His tone is empty. I doubt he’d care if I starved. I’m just a pawn in his game. For now, that means I get to live.

He unwraps it and hands it to me. “Move.”

I stand up. He removes the chair from the cell. Lucas swings the door shut and turns the lock. I take a small bite of the bar and stash the rest in my pocket. Who knows when I’ll eat again.

“Wait, what exactly do you want me to find out?”

“Use your brain.” Lucas smirks. “You’ve done this before. It shouldn’t be hard to figure out.”

I’m left in the dark. It’s shocking to realize how blind Humans are without light. Evelyn had let me sleep with a light on for comfort. The night we left, street lamps lit the road. But here, I can barely see my own hand in front of my face.

The dungeon door eventually opens. Rays of sunlight briefly illuminate the space. I see Evelyn before I see Zachary. Her hands are bound, just like mine were. Zachary’s dark eyes find mine and narrow.

He shoves Evelyn into the cell opposite mine. She keeps her head down, but I can see she’s been crying. Fake tears? I’m not sure. I’ve never seen her truly cry.

As he locks her cell, Evelyn slides down the wall to the floor. I still can’t see how she might be a Lycan, but Athena said they can smell her. “Are you okay?” I ask softly once Zachary leaves. He left the light on. Was that for my benefit?

“We have to get out of here, Seraphina! You were right. We never should have come.”

“What did Athena say to you?”

“She asked me about Levi. I told her what I know, but I don’t think she cares. I thought she was supposed to be a great Alpha.”

“I guess she’s just being cautious.” I sigh.

“You weren’t in there as long as I was.” She stares at her lap.

“Maybe she just doesn’t want to listen to me.” I mutter, frowning. “Maybe she thought you might know more. I guess now we just wait.”

“Screw that. I’m finding a way out of here.”
