Chapter 23

Alexander Kensington's Summit Trailhawk sped down Magnolia Avenue, leaving the pursuing vehicles far behind.

"Dominic must have sent his men to tail me," Evelyn Carter murmured, turning to face Alexander. "He's probably checking if I've reconnected with Phoenix Labs."

"Hmm?" Alexander arched an eyebrow. "Did you give him your word you wouldn't return?"

"I made no promises," Evelyn replied coolly. "But he likely believes he's manipulated me again." The old Evelyn would have trusted Dominic blindly, but not anymore. Not after witnessing his betrayal with Vanessa Blake firsthand.

"So what's your move now?" Alexander asked, genuinely intrigued. While he'd planned to avenge the wrongs done to her, it seemed his wife had her own methods of retribution.

Evelyn gazed calmly ahead. "He wants me to take the fall for the competition scandal at his press conference."

Alexander's voice turned icy. "When?"

"Tonight or tomorrow, I'd guess. He's desperate." Evelyn met his gaze. "Last night's events destroyed both his reputation and DR Holdings'. The investigation committee won't give him much time."

"You're not actually considering it?" Alexander couldn't imagine his sharp-witted wife bowing to Dominic's demands.

"Only if I've lost my mind," Evelyn said with quiet determination. "What's rightfully mine will return to me."

Alexander studied her serene expression - that timeless beauty that grew more captivating the longer one looked. Gently tucking a stray lock behind her ear, he murmured, "Lean on me whenever you need to."

The simple offer warmed Evelyn's heart. During her years with Dominic, she'd grown accustomed to handling everything alone. He'd always been too busy building his empire - too important for dinners, movies, or even conversations. Only during product launches would he spare her attention.

Now, hearing Alexander's words, unexpected tears pricked her eyes. She found herself leaning against his shoulder, whispering, "I will." The spontaneous gesture surprised Alexander, bringing an instant smile to his lips.

"Where are we going?" Evelyn asked, surprised by how natural it felt to be in his arms.

"To dinner," Alexander replied. "You haven't eaten, have you?"

Evelyn blinked in astonishment. "How did you know?" It was as if he could read her every need.
