Chapter 24

Alexander chuckled, his eyes glinting with amusement as if he could read Evelyn’s thoughts. "I’m not some creep who spies on people. I just happen to have functioning eyes and ears."

Without warning, he poked her stomach, and she jerked back with a laugh as the ticklish sensation sent a jolt through her. That was when she realized—her stomach had growled loudly, betraying her hunger.

Alexander led her to The Canopy, an upscale restaurant nestled halfway up the hill. It was renowned not just for its avant-garde architecture but for its breathtaking panoramic views.

In a world where Asian cuisine often signaled elite status, The Canopy stood out by offering an exquisite selection of Western dishes, crafted by their master chefs. The menu was a global tapestry—something for every palate.

Naturally, it came with a steep price tag, placing it out of reach for many. Reservations were mandatory, unless, of course, you were a VIP like Alexander, who seemed to have a permanent table waiting.

Evelyn’s gaze drifted to a woman across the room, elegantly handing the menu to her companion. The staff had rushed to attend to them the moment their car pulled up—clearly, they were regulars.

"Order whatever you like," Alexander said, leaning back in his chair.

The waiter appeared instantly. "What cuisine would the lady prefer? We have specialized menus available."

After a brief hesitation, Evelyn replied, "American, please."

She glanced at Alexander. "Is that alright with you?"

"I’m not picky," he said with a shrug.

It wasn’t that she was indecisive—it was the prices. The numbers on the menu made her pulse spike. She’d expected luxury, but this was another level. Even though Alexander was footing the bill, the extravagance made her wince.

"Something wrong?" Alexander’s brow arched when she remained frozen.

"Nothing. Just… overwhelmed by choices," she lied with a nervous laugh, though her struggle was obvious.

Alexander studied her for a moment before turning to the waiter. "Bring us your signature Western dishes for now. She can decide on the rest later."

"Of course, sir!" The waiter vanished, and Evelyn exhaled in relief. At least she didn’t have to agonize over the menu anymore. She set it aside, refusing to look at those terrifying digits again.

It wasn’t that she couldn’t afford it—she just wasn’t used to this lifestyle. Dominic had drilled frugality into her during their early struggles, and the habit had stuck. Funny how deeply ingrained some things became.

The food arrived swiftly, but just as Evelyn took her first bite, her phone buzzed. Sophia’s name flashed on the screen. She shot Alexander an apologetic look before answering.

"Evelyn, I got the leave approved!" Sophia’s voice was practically vibrating with excitement.

"Let me guess—he didn’t even hesitate?" Evelyn smirked, recognizing the triumph in her friend’s tone.

"Approved it instantly! He probably can’t wait to have me out of his sight. When I mentioned it was for a vacation, he even added extra days!" Sophia’s laughter was so loud Evelyn worried Alexander could hear every word. She cleared her throat.

"Well, enjoy your trip."

"Trip? Are you kidding? This is the worst time for me to disappear! Don’t you need me here? If Dominic tries to pin everything on you, I can back you up!"

Evelyn’s grip on her phone tightened. "I appreciate it, but—"

"No buts," Sophia cut in. "I’m not leaving you to deal with this alone."
