Chapter 459
"We're family; no need for formalities," Beatrice said with a warm smile, deftly steering the conversation. "How are things progressing with Adrian regarding the baby?"
Vivian's fingers instinctively brushed against her flat abdomen, her expression turning slightly awkward. "Nothing to report yet."
Beatrice showed no trace of disappointment. She reached out to squeeze Vivian's hand reassuringly. "These matters can't be rushed."
"The more you obsess, the more elusive it becomes. Just relax and let nature take its course."
Vivian nodded absently, her gaze drifting toward the doorway as if searching for someone.
Beatrice noticed immediately. "Adrian left for the office earlier. He won't be joining us for lunch, but don't worry, Leonard and I will keep you company."
Vivian mentally inventoried the kitchen supplies, considering the elderly couple's dietary preferences. She stood abruptly. "Beatrice, Leonard, our pantry's looking rather bare. Please make yourselves comfortable while I pop out to the market." Her natural caretaker instincts kicked in—not out of obligation, but genuine affection for her in-laws.
Beatrice caught her wrist with an amused chuckle. "You seem so composed, yet you're always springing into action. We've barely settled in and you're already planning dinner preparations. There's no hurry, darling. Meal time is hours away." Her tone held nothing but fondness.
Recognizing their sincere desire to simply spend time with her, Vivian obediently retook her seat. As she did, Beatrice added, "We came to enjoy your company, not to watch you work yourself ragged. We may be getting older, but we don't want to be a burden. In fact, I've already sent staff to handle the shopping. They should return shortly. Just sit with me and let's have a proper chat."
True to her word, Blackwood Manor staff soon arrived laden with grocery bags. "Mr. Blackwood, Mrs. Blackwood," they greeted before noticing Vivian and adding respectfully, "Mrs. Vivian Blackwood."
Once the staff had deposited their purchases in the kitchen, Beatrice's demeanor grew serious as she addressed Vivian. "Vivian, I'm aware of the... complications in your marriage, particularly regarding Serena. Adrian seems utterly bewitched by her, deaf to all reason. Now that he's taken over the Blackwood legacy, we can't simply scold him like a child—it would undermine his authority and our family's standing."
Vivian responded softly, "Beatrice, I truly value your understanding and the kindness you and Leonard have shown me."
Beatrice's expression softened with visible relief. "Your willingness to give Adrian another chance shows your feelings for him remain strong, and that there's still hope for him. I only hope this time, you'll both nurture your relationship more carefully."
Vivian blinked in confusion. Was this the sole purpose of their visit?
Noticing her puzzlement, Beatrice explained, "We visited the hospital yesterday and saw Serena. Her condition appears to be worsening."
The revelation clarified their sudden visit. They'd likely witnessed Adrian's interaction with Serena and, hearing divorce rumors, wanted to reassure her. But Serena's predicament was the least of Vivian's concerns. Instead, she grasped Beatrice's hand, her worried gaze scanning both elders. Relieved to see them looking hale and hearty, she asked gently, "Are you both alright? Nothing serious from your checkup, I hope?"
"Just routine maintenance," Beatrice replied, touched by Vivian's genuine concern. In the Blackwood family, expressions of worry often masked ulterior motives. To Beatrice and Leonard, Vivian's sincerity was refreshingly pure.
