Chapter 20
The weight of Vivian's silence filled the room like thick smoke.
Lydia Bennett studied her protégé's downcast expression while lighting a cigarette with practiced elegance.
Crossing her slender legs, the seasoned agent exhaled a slow stream of smoke. "I had such grand visions for your future."
She tapped her manicured nails against the armrest. "With your striking features and raw acting talent, stardom was practically guaranteed."
A bitter laugh escaped her lips. "Yet what did you choose? Before your first leading role, before your name ever graced a theater marquee - you threw it all away for romance."
Lydia's sharp gaze swept across the modest hotel room. "Did you ever consider the realities of marrying into the Blackwood dynasty? It might have been different if Adrian had actually married you, but now..."
Vivian's hands trembled visibly, her knuckles whitening around the fabric of her dress.
"Remember Serena Whitmore?" Lydia continued mercilessly. "The woman who stole your breakout role? She didn't have half your talent or beauty, yet she persevered."
She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "Even after securing Adrian Blackwood as her partner, she never stopped working. Now she picks roles at will between films and television."
Vivian flinched at the mention of Adrian and Serena, the familiar ache blooming in her chest.
"You could have surpassed her," Lydia pressed. "With your potential, you should be the one choosing projects now."
Lowering her eyes, Vivian released her death grip on the fabric. "You're right, Lydia," she murmured, her voice steadier than expected. "I was blinded by love, but I see clearly now. My career deserves my full dedication. Let's leave my mistakes in the past."
Lydia arched a perfectly sculpted brow. "And if love comes knocking again?"
Vivian raised her hand in solemn vow. "I swear on my career, it won't happen again."
A satisfied smirk played at Lydia's lips as she stubbed out her cigarette.
For hours, Lydia put Vivian through rigorous acting exercises, testing her range with various roles. Relief washed over the agent as she confirmed Vivian's talent remained undiminished.
Before leaving, Lydia delivered her final instructions. "With your looks and skills, we won't settle for mediocre roles. But remember - you're rebuilding from scratch. I'll find you auditions, even in smaller productions. Hone your craft, Vivian. Don't make me regret this."
Vivian nodded, determination shining in her emerald eyes.
Lydia allowed herself a rare, genuine smile as she closed the door. She'd always believed in Vivian Hartley's star power - now it was time to prove the entire entertainment world wrong.
