Chapter 197

The tension in the air was palpable as their gazes locked across the table.

Maxwell's careless remark sent shivers down Vivian's spine. Her voice turned glacial. "How generous of you, Mr. Sterling. But let me remind you - Adrian and I are legally bound. Surely a man of your standing wouldn't stoop to being the other man?"

His smirk never wavered. "For you," he purred, "I might make an exception."

Vivian's composure shattered. She rose abruptly, her eyes flashing with steel. "Your past assistance is appreciated, Mr. Sterling. But this ends now. Any scandal wouldn't just tarnish my reputation - your family's upcoming IPO would suffer too. Bad press isn't what investors want to see."

Her calculated words revealed thorough research. Since returning from Emberglow County, Vivian had investigated the Sterling family. While she lacked resources for deep digging, she'd uncovered enough leverage.

Maxwell's casual posture stiffened. The charming facade cracked, revealing something predatory beneath. "Is that a threat, Vivian? Who do you think will protect you? Your father? Adrian?" His lips curled. "The Blackwoods always prioritize business. Now that Adrian's reunited with Serena, do you think he'd risk his position for you? My family may not equal the Blackwood Group, but we're powerful enough to make him hesitate."

Vivian planted her palms on the table, leaning into his venomous stare. "I protect myself. And when you've got nothing left to lose, you fear nothing. In this digital age, public opinion destroys empires. Would your father appreciate you provoking a scorned woman and endangering the Sterling name?"

Her challenge hung between them, the last pretense of civility evaporating. Straightening, she offered a frosty smile. "I'll take care of the check. Goodbye, Mr. Sterling."

"Permanently," she added silently.

Maxwell remained seated, his handsome features twisting into something ugly.

Though he didn't follow, his darkened expression promised retribution.

At the counter, Vivian's fingers trembled slightly as she paid. Only when she stepped into the night air did she realize she'd abandoned most of her dessert.

Returning wasn't worth further confrontation. Some sacrifices, she told herself, prevented greater disasters.

With a heavy heart, she walked away.

Nearby, shocked eyes tracked her departure.

Dominic watched until Vivian disappeared into the shadows. Turning to his companions, disbelief etched his features. "Tell me I'm hallucinating. Was that really Adrian's wife just now?"

Adrian and Serena had left moments before Dominic and his friends entered through the side entrance.

His friends' confirming nods spoke volumes.
