Chapter 173

Dominic glanced at his phone, his lips curving into an involuntary smile at the playful profile picture lighting up his screen. With a careless swipe, he exited the messaging app. "Just one of my cousins," he explained casually. "She's searching for an apartment near her university, and one of her classmates happens to know the area well."

A quiet chuckle escaped him as he recalled the sharp wit and offbeat humor of the girl he'd been texting. It had been ages since someone had intrigued him this effortlessly.

Bianca's interest waned instantly at the mention of family. "Oh, your cousin," she murmured, her tone flat. Without hesitation, she pivoted the conversation. "Dominic, why don't I introduce you to Adrian's grandfather inside?"

His gaze swept across the garden, taking in the elegant crowd admiring the meticulously arranged flowers. Recognizing he was out of place among such refined company, he nodded and followed Bianca indoors.

In a secluded corner of the grand living room, Margaret sat by the sunlit window, her movements precise as she brewed coffee. She had no desire to confront Vivian directly—such a scene would only create unnecessary tension. Nor did she wish to play the gracious, doting mother-in-law for their guests. Instead, she sought refuge in this quiet nook, savoring a moment of peace amidst the party's lively hum.

Leonard observed her practiced hands as she poured the rich, aromatic brew. "Among the Blackwoods," he remarked with appreciation, "no one makes coffee quite like you."

Margaret offered him a graceful smile. "Leonard, I'm flattered, but drinking coffee this late might leave you restless all night."

"Margaret, could you prepare some for Vivian and Adrian as well?"

Before she could finish, Beatrice entered with Vivian and Adrian in tow. Vivian greeted them warmly. "Leonard, Margaret."

Leonard, well-versed in the couple's marital struggles thanks to Margaret's confidences, studied them thoughtfully. With the wisdom of his years, he offered gentle counsel. "Marriage is never without its challenges. Even the strongest couples face storms. What matters is understanding each other and nurturing that bond."

To Vivian's astonishment, Adrian responded without hesitation. Closing the distance between them, he draped an arm around her slender waist in a display of intimacy. "We'll do exactly that. With any luck, by next year's gathering, you'll be holding your great-grandchild."

Vivian's eyes widened. For a man as notoriously reserved and pragmatic as Adrian, such a declaration—especially in front of family—was utterly uncharacteristic. Her mind raced with questions.

Had he truly considered this? Where exactly did he plan to procure this great-grandchild? Surely not from her—was he thinking of Serena and her unborn child instead?

Adrian's sharp gaze caught her racing thoughts, her expressive eyes flickering with suspicion. A faint smirk touched his lips, but he remained silent.

Leonard, however, was delighted by the prospect. His face lit up with a broad smile. "Marvelous! Four generations under one roof would be a true blessing."

Beatrice, far from convinced, arched a knowing brow. She was well aware the marriage remained unconsummated. With a sly smile, she added, "Don't just say it to please us. If you're serious about a child, you'll need to put in the work. Perhaps cut back on those endless business dinners and cocktails."

"Understood, Grandmother," Adrian replied with obedient deference.
