Chapter 80
"Thank you," Evelyn said politely. She was confident in her work, and there was no reason to downplay her efforts.
Victoria smiled at Evelyn’s self-assured expression. Leaning against the lockers, she turned to face her. "Honestly, I thought you were the one who had plagiarized DR Holdings’ work."
Evelyn arched a brow, unsure how to respond to Victoria’s bluntness. From their first meeting, she had sensed Victoria’s distrust and disdain. The way Victoria looked at her was practically screaming, You’re a thief!
Evelyn didn’t bother explaining herself. Words meant little when someone had already made up their mind. The only way to prove herself was through her skills—and time.
Victoria noticed her silence and continued, "Vanessa Blake was a legend in our industry. A dark horse who swept awards left and right. DR Holdings thrived because of her winning formulas. Asking me to trust an unknown like you? That was a stretch."
Her tone was lighter now, amusement replacing the earlier skepticism. "So, why trust me now?" Evelyn tilted her head. "What if I was the one who stole Vanessa’s work?"
Victoria laughed. "If you were the thief, I’d say, what a waste! With your talent, why plagiarize when you can create something better?" Her gaze was steady, sincere. "I believe in you now."
Evelyn felt warmth spread through her chest. "Thank you," she said, meaning it. Their relationship had started with hostility, but Victoria’s unwavering trust touched her.
Victoria clapped her on the shoulder. "I heard the odds aren’t in your favor for this lawsuit. But after that phone call? You’ll pull through. Lies can’t win against the truth."
Evelyn nodded, grabbing her bag from the locker.
"Still, don’t drag this out," Victoria warned. "Those rumors are damaging your reputation. You need to win—and fast. Then you can join my team."
"Of course." Evelyn smiled.
"Let’s go. I need sleep after this project." Victoria slung an arm around her shoulders as they walked out. "You always take cabs, right? Annoying. Let me drive you home."
Evelyn shook her head. "It’s fine."
"What, still holding a grudge?" Victoria teased.
"Not at all. You were just doing your job as manager."
"Then what’s the problem? Scared of my car? Or do you secretly love cabs?"
Evelyn laughed. "Neither. Someone’s already picking me up."
Victoria smirked. "Ahh, a boyfriend, huh?"
