Chapter 68

After her meeting with Isabella, Evelyn Carter intended to head straight home, but her phone buzzed with an unexpected call. The number wasn’t saved in her contacts, and for a brief moment, she hesitated before recognizing the sharp, clipped tone on the other end.

Victoria Sterling.

Evelyn hadn’t expected to hear from her so soon.

"The second and third trials are prepped. Are you ready?" Victoria’s voice was direct, almost challenging.

Evelyn considered it for a beat. "When?"

"What, not eager enough? Can you handle it now?" There was a taunting edge to Victoria’s words, but Evelyn wasn’t one to back down from a dare. She preferred challenges thrown in her face over knives in the dark.

Glancing at the time, she replied, "Fine. I’ll be there in twenty."

She had asked for the timing because of the looming court date next week, but if Victoria wanted to rush this, then so be it. Whatever was coming, Evelyn would meet it head-on.

Victoria sent an address—somewhere remote, far from the usual bustle of the city. Frowning, Evelyn forwarded the location to Alexander Kensington.

At that exact moment, Alexander was in the middle of a board meeting when his phone lit up with her name. Without hesitation, he picked it up, ignoring the curious glances from the executives around the table.

"What’s the matter?" he typed back swiftly.

Evelyn, unaware he was occupied, sent a voice message instead. "Do you know this place?"

Alexander exhaled sharply, then tapped his pen against the table. "Carry on without me," he instructed his VP before striding out of the room.

In the empty office next door, he played her message. Her voice was clear, bright—she was outside, probably already on her way.

He pulled up the address, zooming in on the map with two fingers. Recognition flickered in his gaze. "That’s one of DR Holdings’ subsidiaries. Why are you going there?"

Of course, he’d already guessed before she even explained.

Evelyn had made the right call asking him. But why would Victoria send her to a subsidiary now? Just days ago, she’d been adamant about keeping Evelyn out of the project division. Had something changed?

"Got it. Thanks!" Evelyn replied cheerfully before hailing a cab.

If Alexander said the location was safe, then she had nothing to worry about.

Time to see what Victoria had in store for her.
