Chapter 474
"If this doesn't meet your expectations, I'll gift you the commercial complex in Montclair Heights!" Sebastian Winslow ground out between clenched teeth. Evelyn Carter considered his offer. Though she didn't understand the value of that property nor had any use for it, she decided to play along with his wager. "Deal," she agreed with a nod.
Sebastian visibly relaxed at her acceptance. Adjusting his position, he ventured cautiously, "Then... might I stay for dinner?"
"Absolutely! We always welcome guests warmly," Evelyn assured him with a perfectly gracious smile that didn't reach her eyes.
The hypocrisy nearly choked Sebastian. Hadn't this same woman threatened to throw him out moments ago? That sweet smile hid the soul of a demoness!
Having secured his dinner invitation, Sebastian regained his usual cheerful demeanor. Between bites, he attempted conversation. "We've been talking so long, yet I don't know how to properly address you, my lovely hostess."
Evelyn exchanged a glance with Alexander Kensington before answering, "Mrs. Kensington will suffice."
With their wedding approaching, the title was appropriate - and conveniently avoided giving Sebastian her actual name. 'This woman is as cunning as a fox,' he thought grimly.
Undeterred, Sebastian pressed on. "No, I meant your given name. I'm Sebastian Winslow - delighted to make your acquaintance. And you are...?"
His eager expression would have melted most women. Evelyn merely arched an eyebrow. "Mr. Winslow, don't you find it rather improper to ask a married woman's name in front of her husband?"
With that diplomatic deflection, she elegantly ended the conversation.
Sebastian nearly choked on his wine. 'Since when is asking a name considered scandalous?' He opened his mouth to protest but caught Alexander's warning glare. Swallowing his words, he changed tactics. "How did you two meet then?"
This was his true curiosity - how had this mysterious woman breached Cassandra's years-long siege of Alexander's heart? Fate worked in mysterious ways indeed.
Evelyn's gaze turned thoughtful. 'Was it during that competition mishap? Or when I sought his help years prior?' Before she could answer, Alexander interjected, "We go way back," then fixed Sebastian with an exasperated look. "Finished interrogating us? Leave if you are."
"Not at all!" Sebastian protested, hastily stuffing his mouth with food as proof. His mind raced - Cassandra would skin him alive if he returned empty-handed. He needed one more attempt.
Just as he drew breath to speak, Harrison entered urgently, his expression grave. "Mr. Kensington."
