Chapter 469
The icy silence from Alexander Kensington didn’t deter Sebastian Winslow. Besides, the warmth of Alexander’s penthouse was too inviting to resist.
Sebastian’s body had finally stopped trembling from the electric shock, and he managed to push himself off the floor, collapsing onto the plush sofa with a satisfied sigh.
Alexander shot him a glare, but Sebastian merely grinned, settling deeper into the cushions. “Relax, will you? You’ve already thrown me out of your car and zapped me. I’m not complaining.”
He leaned forward, mischief glinting in his eyes. “All I want is to meet your fiancée. Why the secrecy? Is she so hideous you’re ashamed to—”
The sudden frost in Alexander’s expression made him swallow the rest of his words.
Sebastian raised his hands in surrender. “Fine, fine. I’m just trying to help. The cat’s out of the bag anyway—no point hiding her now. If you’re serious about marrying her, wouldn’t it be better if I met her first? Before my sister does?”
He watched Alexander closely, hoping logic would crack that stubborn resolve.
“You know how Cassandra is,” Sebastian pressed. “She’s been glued to your side for years, scaring off every woman who dared come near you. If she finds out you’re engaged—and not just in some business arrangement—she’ll lose it.”
The thought made him shudder. Cassandra wasn’t just stubborn—she was volatile. If she felt betrayed, there was no telling what she’d do.
That was why Sebastian needed to see this mystery woman for himself. If she wasn’t right for Alexander, he’d do everything to break them apart. But if she was… well, someone had to warn her about the storm coming her way.
“I’ve never led Cassandra on,” Alexander said coldly. “Everyone knows that.”
Sebastian nodded vigorously. “Of course! Even my parents get it. But you know how she is—logic doesn’t apply to her. If it did, she’d have given up years ago.”
His gaze flickered toward the hallway. “Aren’t you worried about what might happen to the woman you’re so desperate to protect?”
Alexander’s expression darkened. The memory of Laurentia flashed in his mind—the fear, the helplessness. Even though Evelyn had escaped unharmed, the mere thought of what could have happened made his blood run cold.
He would never let that happen again.
His voice was steel. “Keep Cassandra in line. If she so much as looks at Evelyn the wrong way, I won’t care whose sister she is. There will be consequences.”
The threat hung in the air, sharp and unyielding.
Sebastian froze. He’d seen Alexander angry before, but this was different. This wasn’t just irritation—it was lethal.
For the first time, Sebastian understood. This wasn’t some political marriage or fleeting infatuation. Alexander was in love.
And that terrified him.
Who was this Evelyn Carter, who had thawed Alexander’s frozen heart?
Sebastian had seen countless women try—beauties, heiresses, geniuses—all failing miserably.
What made her different?
