Chapter 458

The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the room as Cassandra Winslow clenched her fists.

Alexander Kensington had rejected her countless times, but at least there had been no other women in his life. That was the only reason she tolerated his indifference—because deep down, she believed he loved her without realizing it.

The truth was obvious, yet unspoken.

She had waited patiently, convinced that one day he would wake up and see what was right in front of him. But now? An engagement? The mere thought sent a sharp pang of dread through her chest.

"That's why I was so shocked when I heard," Adrienne Prescott said, nodding in agreement. "You never mentioned he was seeing anyone seriously, let alone engaged!"

Cassandra's nails dug into her palms. "Just tell me everything. Now."

Adrienne sighed. "It was Mr. Hawthorne's birthday. My uncle attended with his son. When he returned, he mentioned something about Alexander being engaged. I overheard it by accident."

Cassandra blinked. "That's it?"

Adrienne shrugged. "That's all I know."

Cassandra exhaled sharply, frustration bubbling inside her. "You're telling me you have no idea who he's engaged to?"

"My uncle didn't say. He just mentioned that since Mr. Kensington was already engaged, the wedding preparations would start soon. That's all."

Adrienne had been eavesdropping when Alistair Prescott had casually dropped the news to his wife. It wasn't unusual—social events and gift exchanges were always the women's domain, and he had likely mentioned it so Adrienne would be aware.

Of course, Adrienne knew how Cassandra felt about Alexander. She had been in love with him for years.

Cassandra's mind raced. If this was true, she needed to know who her competition was. How could she strategize if she didn't even know the enemy?

"Don't panic," Adrienne said, placing a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "Why don't you just ask Alexander directly?"

"No." Cassandra's voice was firm.

If the rumor was false, she could laugh it off as a joke. But if it was true? She'd be humiliated.

She wouldn't give him the satisfaction.

Not yet.

Not until she had a plan.
