Chapter 406
According to Dominic's source, Evelyn was recommended to Phoenix Labs by someone from the Celestia Group.
That explained why her entry into Phoenix Labs had been so seamless, granting her access to superior resources and care.
Dominic trusted his informant because he couldn't fathom why anyone would guide a newcomer into Phoenix Labs otherwise. At first, he suspected she had connections to an executive there.
Then he learned she was from the Hawthorne family and assumed she had leveraged their influence.
But that theory crumbled when his source revealed the name behind her recommendation...
Dominic clenched his jaw, his voice dropping to a low, tense murmur. "Evelyn, is there someone else? Is that why you refuse to come back to me?"
Surprise flickered in Evelyn's eyes. She thought Dominic had uncovered her relationship with Alexander. Her pulse quickened—she hadn’t planned for him to find out this way.
How? When did he learn about us?
Seeing her stunned reaction, Dominic’s suspicions solidified. She had moved on.
The realization twisted inside him like a knife.
Yet, after a moment of bitter calculation, he refused to surrender.
"I know this is my fault. I made you who you are now. Of course, you'd seek someone to lean on. But tell me—do you really think he deserves you?" His tone dripped with condescension, as if the other man wasn’t even worth considering as competition.
Evelyn stared at him, incredulous. "If he isn’t worthy, then what does that make you?"
Dominic’s arrogance was staggering. How could he possibly compare himself to Alexander? The sheer audacity!
"Obviously, I am!" he declared, puffing up with pride. "Sure, DR Holdings is small now, and I’m not in his position—but think carefully. He might seem impressive, but he’s just an assistant. That’s as far as he’ll ever go. Without Mr. Kensington, he’s nothing. Me? I’m building something real. Look at our latest product line—profits will double by year’s end. We’ll go public soon."
He leaned in, voice turning coaxing. "Evelyn, we have a future. If you stay with Harrison Sullivan, all he can offer you are temporary perks. Do you really think Phoenix Labs or Celestia Group obey him? It’s only because he works for Mr. Kensington. The second he’s fired, he’s worthless. Wake up. Come back to me."
Dominic looked at her like he was delivering a revelation.
Evelyn, however, had turned her face toward the window, one hand propped under her chin. Her shoulders trembled slightly.
She’s crying, Dominic thought, softening his tone. "Evelyn, just come home. I’ll treat you right this time. I’ll even rename the company for you. Instead of DR Holdings, we’ll call it Evie. Like your nickname. Elegant. Sophisticated."
He didn’t see the way her lips pressed together—not in sorrow, but to stifle laughter.
This was all one colossal misunderstanding. Dominic, just like Isabella before him, had mistaken Harrison for her lover.
Harrison wasn’t even part of this equation, yet here he was, dragged into the drama again.
Why does this keep happening to me? Evelyn thought, exasperated.
Dominic mistook her silence for hesitation.
He didn’t realize she was fighting the urge to burst out laughing at his delusions.
