Chapter 335
Adrienne Laurent was naturally cautious, but her instincts were right this time.
Yet Evelyn Carter’s refusal wasn’t solely about avoiding gossip. Meeting Serena Whitaker at such a sensitive moment could spark unnecessary rumors.
Even if Evelyn didn’t care, it would still tarnish Serena’s and her father’s reputations.
Evelyn studied the man before her and suggested, “How about this? I’ll call Serena and discuss things over the phone.”
The man remained silent, so Evelyn pulled out her phone and dialed Serena’s number.
The call didn’t connect.
“Ms. Whitaker is in a difficult position, Ms. Carter. We hope you’ll understand,” the man explained.
At first, Evelyn wanted to refuse, but the failed call and the sight of Serena’s ring in the man’s possession made her uneasy. What if something had happened to Serena?
After a brief hesitation, she relented.
“Fine. I’ll go with you.”
“Wait!”
Adrienne, realizing she couldn’t stop Evelyn, rushed forward.
“If you’re going, then so am I.”
“Ms. Whitaker only requested Ms. Carter’s presence.”
The man clearly didn’t want Adrienne tagging along.
“I just want to see what’s going on. I’ll call you if anything happens. Be right back.” Evelyn gestured with her fingers, promising to contact Adrienne.
But Adrienne stood firm. “No. I won’t let you out of my sight right now, no matter what. If you’re worried about Ms. Whitaker, I’m coming with you.”
“Adrienne…”
Evelyn started to protest, but the man cut in, “Ms. Carter, time is running out. Your assistant can come if she insists.”
Since they allowed Adrienne to join, Evelyn didn’t argue further as they climbed into the car.
The interior was spacious.
Aside from the driver, only Evelyn, Adrienne, and the man who had spoken to them earlier were inside. He had fallen silent since they entered, and the atmosphere grew heavy.
A faint scent lingered—likely from an air freshener.
Evelyn tried calling Serena again, but her phone was now completely turned off.
“What’s really going on with Serena?”
The unanswered call and the switched-off phone only deepened Evelyn’s concern.
“Ms. Whitaker is facing some trouble and hopes you can assist her.”
“What kind of trouble? Does Mr. Whitaker know about this?” Adrienne pressed.
If it was something serious, shouldn’t Serena seek help from her father, who had influence in this city?
Evelyn had no connections here. How could she possibly help?
“Ms. Whitaker said you’re the only one who can help her, Ms. Carter.”
The man’s vague answers frustrated Evelyn. “Where is Serena right now?”
He looked at her, his eyes obscured behind dark sunglasses.
After a beat, he replied, “Ms. Carter, why so many questions? You’ll find out when we arrive.”
“You—”
Adrienne started to retort but suddenly swayed, pressing a hand to her forehead as she shook it violently.
“You guys…”
