Chapter 296
Evelyn's laughter filled the room, but it was cut short when Alexander suddenly grasped her chin. Her breath hitched as she blinked up at him in surprise.
"Is he really that amusing?" His voice was low, edged with something dark.
She swallowed hard. "N-No, not at all."
All she had been thinking about was sourcing quality wood for her project. Why was Alexander acting like this? She hadn’t even spared a second thought for that craftsman.
Sometimes, his possessiveness was overwhelming.
"So, he wasn’t interesting just now? Weren’t you praising him earlier?"
Alexander was being impossible. Evelyn had brushed it off as playful teasing, but the intensity in his gaze told her this was different. He looked genuinely wounded.
"I meant his woodwork was impressive! Just his woodwork!" She hurried to explain, tilting her head to study his expression. "Remember those carved figurines I brought home? You said they were adorable—like a pair of twins. Every time I see them, I think of us."
Her survival instincts kicked in. She leaned closer, her voice softening. "You’re the only one who fascinates me. There’s no one else."
A flicker of amusement crossed Alexander’s face, his stern expression easing into a faint smirk.
Seizing the moment, Evelyn pressed a quick kiss to his cheek. "You’re ridiculous. Why would you even be jealous of some carpenter I met once?"
Alexander exhaled, his shoulders relaxing slightly. "Who said I was jealous?"
"You weren’t?" She arched a brow, teasing. "You looked like you wanted to murder someone just now."
His eyes darkened. "Are you sure it was murder in my eyes? Or something else?" He pulled her abruptly from the chair, lifting her effortlessly.
Evelyn gasped, her arms instinctively wrapping around his neck. "That’s not what I meant!"
"Then what did you mean?"
He carried her to the bed, lowering her gently before caging her beneath him. His forehead rested against hers, their breaths mingling. This close, she could see the flecks of gold in his brown eyes.
"Alex..." She whispered his name, tightening her hold on him. "No one in this world compares to you."
The words were sincere, and they unraveled something in him. His gaze deepened, fingers tracing her cheek with aching tenderness.
"Will you always feel this way?"
The vulnerability in his voice caught her off guard. Despite his wealth, power, and status, he still needed reassurance. It made her heart ache.
"Always." She nodded firmly. "You’re the best, Alexander Kensington. The absolute best."
Then she tugged him down, sealing her promise with a kiss.
Alexander groaned against her lips, deepening it with a hunger that left no room for doubt.
