Chapter 282
"Possible miscarriage. An ambulance has been called. They'll be here in about three minutes." Evelyn checked her watch and suppressed the urge to sigh. Today was just not her day. What rotten luck.
Sophia gasped. "Then—"
"It's a hoax," Evelyn snapped.
"Oh." Sophia's expression cleared instantly. She trusted Evelyn completely.
If Evelyn had wanted to hurt Vanessa, she would have done so long ago. There was no way Evelyn would deliberately cause a miscarriage unless Vanessa had provoked her first.
Besides, this wasn’t even the right place for such a stunt.
Vanessa’s breath hitched when she heard Evelyn’s words. She lifted her head, her lips trembling as she bit out, "Evelyn, how dare you slander me! I wouldn’t have fallen if it weren’t for you! Now—ah! It hurts! It hurts!"
Her face twisted in exaggerated pain, but Evelyn wasn’t fooled. People naturally sympathized with the weak, but Evelyn only rolled her eyes.
Slander? Who’s slandering who here?
The ambulance arrived swiftly, and the paramedics loaded Vanessa onto the stretcher. Evelyn had no intention of following, but she made a quick call. Rumors could easily spiral, and she didn’t want Sophia caught in the crossfire, so they both trailed behind.
At the hospital, Vanessa was rushed through a preliminary exam before being wheeled into surgery.
Outside the operating room, Sophia was still reeling. "She was actually pregnant? Then why would she use her pregnancy to cause a scene? What was she trying to achieve?"
"Good question," Evelyn muttered. She wanted to know too.
Was this just another attempt to frame her? But if Vanessa had miscarried because of this, what would she gain?
Evelyn replayed the earlier confrontation in her mind. "Unless I misheard, didn’t she say she broke up with Dominic?"
That’s exactly what it had sounded like.
"Broke up? While she’s pregnant?" Sophia’s eyes widened. She knew exactly how twisted those two were. How could they—so deeply entangled in their toxicity—suddenly split? The world really was full of surprises. A match made in hell should stay in hell.
"I don’t know. Maybe she’s just unhinged and talking nonsense?" Evelyn frowned. If not, why would Vanessa even bring up Dominic and their supposed breakup? The pieces didn’t fit.
"She’s definitely unhinged," Evelyn concluded, tapping her chin thoughtfully. That explanation made the most sense.
A nurse approached. "Are either of you family? We need someone to settle the deposit."
Evelyn and Sophia exchanged glances before shaking their heads in unison.
The nurse hesitated. "But you called the ambulance for her. You’re not related?"
"We’re just good Samaritans," Evelyn said smoothly. "Calling an ambulance is one thing. Paying her hospital bills? No."
She’d rather burn the money than spend it on Vanessa.
The nurse faltered. "Then—"
"Family, right?" Evelyn’s lips curled. "Hold on. Let me make a call."
