Chapter 249

"Yes." Alexander Kensington gave a firm nod.

"Thank you!" Evelyn Carter expressed her gratitude sincerely. But this only stoked Dominic Reeves' jealousy. "You only thank him? What about me?"

Evelyn smirked. "I don’t need to be so formal with you." Before Dominic could protest, she added, "Hey, you were the one who said we shouldn’t stand on ceremony."

Well, that backfired spectacularly, Dominic thought, inwardly groaning.

Harrison, his assistant, watched in quiet amusement as his usually unshakable boss floundered under Evelyn’s teasing. Only Ms. Carter can render him speechless like this.

"I might be late tonight. Call me if you need anything," Dominic said, shrugging into his coat.

"Got it." Evelyn rose onto her toes to straighten his collar, her fingers brushing lightly against his neck. A sudden memory surfaced. "Oh, right—you mentioned a vacation earlier. Have you picked a destination yet?"

"Not yet. Why?"

"Nothing major. Vanessa Blake has a few suggestions. Since you’re swamped and haven’t decided, why don’t Sophia Grant, Victoria Sterling, and I handle the planning?"

Dominic’s lips quirked. "Fine by me."

"You’re the best!"

She pressed a quick kiss to his lips, and he chuckled. "If I’d known a trip was all it took to make you this happy, I’d have scheduled one every month."

"Deal!" Evelyn grinned, then nudged him toward the door. "Now go, or you’ll be late for your meeting." She waited until his car disappeared down the driveway before turning back inside.

With Dominic’s blessing, all that remained was coordinating with Sophia and Victoria. Flipping on the morning news, Evelyn dialed Sophia.

"Did you bring me home last night?"

"Oh, you do remember!" Sophia teased. "I thought you were too far gone."

Evelyn winced. The night was a blur—she’d need to be more careful next time. She rarely drank and had no idea her tolerance was this abysmal. "Please tell me I didn’t do anything embarrassing."

"Of course you did. You babbled nonstop, refused to leave, and demanded we keep drinking. I practically had to drag you out."

"What?!" Evelyn gasped, horrified.

Sophia burst out laughing. "Relax! I’m messing with you. You just conked out. The only struggle was getting your address out of you—good thing Mr. Kensington showed up when he did."

She paused, then lowered her voice. "By the way, I told Victoria you live near Crestview Heights. Since it’s close to Magnolia Avenue, she bought it. You almost blew your cover last night. Don’t mix them up again."

Evelyn groaned. Note to self: never drink near loose-lipped friends.
