Chapter 244

Lucien gripped Vanessa's chin with an intensity that made her pulse race. "I may be a man with particular tastes, but I don't settle for just anyone," he murmured, his voice low and dangerous. "Only perfection will do."

His breath ghosted over her neck, sending shivers down her spine. In that moment, he reminded her of a predator—hungry, relentless, and utterly intoxicating.

Vanessa held her breath, terrified yet mesmerized.

To her relief, he didn’t sink his teeth into her skin like some mythical creature. Instead, his lips brushed against her throat in a teasing caress before he nipped lightly. "The fragrance I crave only lingers on perfumers like you."

Her mind reeled.

He released her, stepping back, but Vanessa remained frozen, afraid any sudden movement might reignite his hunger. It made sense now—Lucien was drawn to female perfumers, their bodies carrying traces of the scents they crafted. Some might find it overwhelming, but for him, it was irresistible.

Does that mean he’s obsessed with the essence of perfume itself?

Before she could process the thought, the timer chimed.

It was ready.

Vanessa darted to the counter, her fingers hovering over the three test tubes. Excitement warred with doubt—what if she had failed?

"Stop hesitating," Lucien commanded, his hand closing over hers as he plucked the middle vial. He inhaled deeply, his eyes darkening with approval. "This one."

His certainty pulled her in. She leaned closer, catching the rich floral notes—close to what she had envisioned, but not quite complete. It still needed time to mature.

Yet, his confidence reassured her. Despite his terrifying intensity, Vanessa never doubted his expertise. "Lucien," she vowed, staring at the shimmering liquid, "if I win this year’s championship, I’ll make sure you’re properly rewarded."

Her imagination conjured the trophy in her hands, the triumph, the glory—

A rough embrace shattered the fantasy.

Lucien pressed against her from behind, his body flush against hers, his voice a sinful whisper in her ear. "Such a cruel promise. Why tease me when you won’t deliver now?"

His warmth seeped into her, his breath sending tremors through her. Vanessa stiffened. "I—I told you why. I’m not trying to—"

"Hush." A finger silenced her lips. "You want to help me?"

She hesitated only a heartbeat before nodding. "Yes."

His chuckle was dark, promising. "Then there’s something you can do for me."
