Chapter 234
"Evelyn just said she lives in—" Victoria still hadn't recovered from her shock.
"I know, but she was talking about Magnolia Grove, just a few blocks from Crestview Heights," Sophia replied quickly. "Honestly, Evelyn once joked about wanting a place in Crestview Heights. No surprise she's bringing it up again—she's completely wasted now."
"I nearly had a heart attack!" Victoria exhaled in relief, finally accepting Sophia's explanation.
"Same here! Just wait till she sobers up tomorrow. I’ll never let her forget this," Sophia teased.
Victoria hesitated, then shook her head. "Actually, I should come with you. I’m still worried about you two."
She flagged down a cab and opened the door for them, about to climb in herself.
After making sure Evelyn was settled, Sophia rushed over to stop her. "It's fine. I’ll get her home safe. If you come, it’ll just be more complicated. You have work tomorrow—go rest. I’ll text you when we get to her place."
"But..." Victoria wavered, but she knew Sophia was right. Reluctantly, she nodded.
"Okay, but be careful! Text me if you need anything," she insisted, scribbling down the cab’s license plate number.
As the car pulled away, Sophia finally let out a breath. She glanced at Evelyn, stunned by her state. They’d worked together for years, but she’d never seen her like this. It was unsettling.
The cab reached Crestview Heights but was stopped at the gates. Sophia didn’t know which building Evelyn lived in, nor did she have Alexander Kensington’s number. Her only option was to wake Evelyn up.
"Evelyn, wake up. We’re here! Which building is yours?" She gently patted her cheek.
"Ugh... Quiet!" Evelyn groaned, cracking her eyes open for a second before shutting them again.
Sophia sighed. She thought about checking Evelyn’s phone, but the driver impatiently urged them out before she could.
With Evelyn half-slumped against her, Sophia struggled to keep her upright while fishing for the phone.
"Evelyn, come on. You can sleep once we’re inside!" she pleaded, still trying to rouse her.
Just then, a sleek black car pulled up beside them.
Sophia instinctively stepped in front of Evelyn, moving them both back. The window rolled down, revealing Alexander Kensington’s sharp, disapproving gaze.
"What’s going on?" His voice was ice.
Relief washed over Sophia. "Mr. Kensington! We were celebrating, but Evelyn had too much to drink."
She swallowed hard under his piercing stare, silently willing Evelyn to wake up and save her from this.
"Get in," he ordered, stepping out and effortlessly taking Evelyn from her arms.
Sophia’s shoulders sagged in relief. "Um, since she’s with you, I’ll just—"
"You’re staying. It’s impossible to get a cab here," he cut her off.
Sophia blinked in surprise. "I—I can walk to the main road—"
"Harrison will drive you home." His tone left no room for argument.
She could only nod.
