Chapter 228
"No! There are too many people at the lab, and they'll spot you. Even if the perfume is a success and I use it to enter the competition, the organizing committee might use our connection as an excuse to disqualify me," Vanessa said, her brow furrowing in frustration.
She groaned, pressing her fingers to her temples. "Can't you just analyze the samples without coming into the lab? Why don't I bring the failed batches for you to examine?"
Lucien gave a slow nod. "I can do that. But the results might not be ideal. Either I'll pinpoint the issue immediately, or this could drag on for ages—maybe ten more attempts."
It felt like an endless loop. If Vanessa refused Lucien's offer to accompany her to the lab, he might never solve the problem. The perfume would fail, and she'd lose her chance at the competition.
But if she let him into the lab without considering Dominic's reaction, the organizers could accuse her of cheating. The thought made her stomach twist. She exhaled sharply, rubbing her temples.
Lucien studied her for a moment before speaking. "I have an idea. It's risky, though. Depends on whether you're willing to take the chance."
"What is it?" she demanded, desperate for any solution.
"If I recall correctly, you're in charge of the lab, aren't you?" he asked.
Even though she rarely showed up, she was still the director. Vanessa lifted her chin. "Of course. I am the research director."
A slow, knowing smile curved his lips. "Then you decide when we go in."
Her eyes widened. "You mean—"
"Too many people during the day. But at night?" His grin turned wicked. "No one would know."
The knot in her chest loosened. The lab emptied after hours. With her access, sneaking him in wouldn’t be an issue. They could fix the formula, and Lucien could even start production. With his expertise, she’d have a flawless entry. No more worrying about disqualification.
But when her gaze met his, her pulse stuttered. Being alone with him… that was another risk entirely.
"I'm just offering suggestions. The decision is yours." He stretched lazily, arms behind his head. "Though if you want my help, you’d better decide soon."
Vanessa clenched her fists, weighing the consequences. Finally, she gave a sharp nod. "Fine. Tonight. I’ll take you to the lab. But this perfume has to work."
