Chapter 220
Alexander Kensington's expression remained dark, his heart clearly wounded.
Evelyn Carter continued to soothe him, "Of course, my success is all because of you. You deserve the most credit."
She leaned closer, her voice warm. "You're the hidden force behind everything! Having your support is my greatest honor. I'm so proud of you!"
Alexander said nothing. Neither did Isabella Thornton. Harrison coughed lightly in the backseat.
If they hadn't been sharing the same car with Alexander, Isabella would have applauded Evelyn's masterful flattery.
Honestly, this was the first time she'd seen Evelyn act like this. It had never been like this with Dominic Reeves. Their conversations had been sparse, mostly work-related. Occasionally, Dominic would offer a compliment, but their interactions had never felt this effortless—this alive.
Isabella stole a glance at Alexander. His stormy expression had completely shifted. She could have sworn she saw the faintest blush on his cheeks.
Huh. Who knew he could be shy?
"Where did you learn to sweet-talk like that?" He reached out, pinching her cheek, his voice softening. "Even if the new product passes testing, it'll take time before the official launch. If you want to rest and celebrate, why not take a trip? It’ll help you unwind."
"A trip?" Evelyn blinked. The idea hadn't occurred to her. In the past, she'd just moved straight to the next project—sampling raw materials, testing formulas, refining scents. It had been a relentless cycle.
Her reasoning had been simple back then. She wanted to create as much as possible while her inspiration was fresh. Some attempts would fail, others would succeed. DR Holdings would grow, and Dominic could relax. Once they married, she imagined a quieter life—one where she could work at her own pace, free from the grind.
At the time, she’d truly believed they wanted the same things.
"Nothing’s decided yet," Alexander said smoothly. "If you have a destination in mind, let me know. I’ll arrange everything for you both."
Isabella perked up instantly. "Both of us?"
Alexander arched a brow. "You don’t want to go?"
Before he could finish, Isabella was nodding vigorously. "Yes! Absolutely! I definitely want to go!"
She couldn’t believe it. After years at DR Holdings, she’d never gotten perks like this. Even if she was just tagging along, she wasn’t about to refuse.
Earlier, she’d assumed Alexander disliked her. Now? She wasn’t so sure.
The car slowed to a stop. Alexander glanced out the window. "This is you."
"Oh! Right, home sweet home." Isabella grinned, far more relaxed than when she’d first stepped into the car. "Thank you, Mr. Kensington. Have a wonderful night!"
Evelyn frowned at the darkened street. "It’s too late. Let me walk you in."
