Chapter 186
"Mom?" Dominic asked Genevieve in confusion. He was stunned, not expecting her to say that.
"Why would Evelyn tamper with the form? How many years have you been together? You know very well that most of DR Holdings' signature products were created by her. She was always devoted to you. So why force her out?" Genevieve's knuckles rapped sharply against the table, her expression stern—like a headmistress reprimanding a wayward student.
Dominic stiffened, discomfort prickling his skin. "Mom..."
"I asked Lucien to help you because you're my son. I don’t want to see your efforts crumble after all these years. But that doesn’t mean you’re blameless. Dominic, you made a grave mistake!"
Her words were merciless, and the most uncomfortable person in the room was Vanessa.
What is happening? I came here to meet my future mother-in-law, but she hasn’t even glanced at me properly. Instead, she’s praising his ex right in front of me?
Vanessa shifted in her seat, anxiety coiling in her stomach.
Dominic refused to back down. "Mom, I can’t control my heart. Vanessa is the woman I love. I can’t spend my life with Evelyn just because she’s talented!"
He exhaled sharply. "Yes, Evelyn was brilliant, but you can’t expect me to marry her out of obligation. I admit I used her skills, but I compensated her well. And after all those years together, she walked away without hesitation. That proves how cold she is."
His voice lowered. "Someone like her would’ve betrayed me eventually. I just removed a liability before it hurt the company."
Genevieve’s gaze hardened. "Should I applaud you for that?"
"That’s not what I meant. Mom, today is about Vanessa. The past is over. Evelyn is gone. I love Vanessa, and she’s going to be your daughter-in-law. I’m marrying her."
Genevieve studied Vanessa for a long moment—and Vanessa knew instantly she wasn’t welcome.
"You’re an adult. I can’t stop you from making your own choices." Genevieve retrieved her bag. "But marriage isn’t a game. If you’re determined, then proceed."
She slid a debit card across the table. "A wedding gift. You know I won’t attend. The PIN is your birthday. Whatever happens, I want you to live well."
"Thanks, Mom!" Dominic accepted it eagerly. "Your blessing means everything."
Genevieve stood. "I’ve taken enough of your time. I’ll leave now."
Dominic rose, nudging Vanessa, who reluctantly stood as well.
Genevieve ignored her, resting a hand on Dominic’s shoulder. "Take care."
Then she walked away without another word.
